Wage: $27.85 per hour (increased as a Living Wage employer)

HOURS OF WORK:

Monday - Friday - 8:30 am to 4:00 pm

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

First United is seeking two candidates through the Canada Summer Jobs program to assist with our Community Services Team from July 6 2026 until August 28 2026

TheCanada Summer Jobs (CSJ) Community Service Worker will work with First Unitedstaff to provide support to members of the Downtown East side community manyof whom are struggling to live with a wide range of challenges such asaddiction mental health issues extreme poverty and homelessness.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work at the community hub desk by monitoring the vestibule forsafety answering phone/checking messages making community referrals handingout harm reduction supplies/sundries and assisting with donors/donations.
  • Moving donations and sorting donations between work sites (320 E. Hastings 467 Alexander Street and 501 E. Hastings)
  • Tracking and managing program data tracking inventory.
  • Tasks including and not limited to making harm reduction kits organizing cleaning sanitizing stocking opening and closing of community help desk.
  • Assisting staff and volunteers in the shower program managing the sign-up sheet safety checks and handing out towels and shower supplies.
  • Work with volunteers kitchen and program staff to ensure successful breakfast and lunch service delivery to the DTES community.
  • Assisting with community drop-in programs.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Experience working with vulnerable and/or marginalized individuals.
  • Experience working in a non-profit or social service-related environment is an asset.
  • Ability to pass a vulnerable sector check (required).
  • Ability to be welcoming while maintaining a professional demeanour.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Completed some post-secondary education in a related area (social work counselling psychology sociology social services social sciences criminology etc.).
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Valid Level 1 First Aid Certificate an asset.
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen permanent resident or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and legally entitled to work in B.C.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervisory/Management responsibility: None

Latitude:

The incumbent reports to the Director of Community Services Program Manager or delegate. This individual collaborates frequently with colleagues in the Community Services Department management as well as with bargaining unit staff.

INTERNAL/EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Regular communication is maintained with all levels of staff and management.
  • Communication is also maintained with management and co-workers as work is assigned and completed and information exchanged on an ongoing basis.
  • Frequent communication is required with members of the community.
