Job description

Reports To: Executive Director

Base Salary Range: $106,000–$130,000 (annually)

Work Location: Hybrid – Combination of remote and onsite work to support HAS programs, based in Metro Vancouver

Join a Landmark Black-Led Community Development Initiative

Overview

Hogan’s Alley Society is seeking an experienced real estate development leader to advance one of Canada’s few Black-led Community Land Trust initiatives. This is an opportunity to contribute to community-centered housing and social infrastructure rooted in repair, belonging, and long-term community ownership.

HAS acknowledges that we work and organize on the ancestral and unceded lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations. We are committed to good relations with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples and to addressing the enduring impacts of colonialism, genocide, and systemic racism on Indigenous peoples.

About The Hogan’s Alley Society (HAS)

The Hogan’s Alley Society (HAS) is a Vancouver-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the social, political, economic, and cultural wellbeing of people of African descent through inclusive housing, built spaces, and culturally informed programming. HAS has been a leading advocate for the Black community in Metro Vancouver, addressing urban renewal, residential displacement, and erasure from Vancouver’s historical narrative. Our vision is to own and operate the built environment on the historic site of the Black community in Vancouver, recreating a hub for the Black community through the Hogan’s Alley Block and the Hogan’s Alley Society Community Land Trust.

In September 2022, HAS signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Vancouver to enter into a long-term lease for the 898 Main Street block (Hogan’s Alley Block) upon the removal of the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts. This development will include a Black cultural center, affordable housing, small business spaces, and childcare facilities, addressing historical displacement policies. This initiative is one of the few Black-led Community Land Trusts in Canada, ensuring long-term affordability and preventing further displacement of Black communities.

Scope of Role

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Director of Community Real Estate Development to lead the growth of our community land trust portfolio and oversee real estate development projects from conception to completion. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5–10 years of experience in the real estate development field, with a proven track record in managing complex projects, obtaining necessary approvals, and ensuring financial feasibility. The Director will ensure development activities remain aligned with the Society’s mandate, community priorities, and commitment to addressing the historical and ongoing impacts of displacement experienced by Black communities. The Director of Community Real Estate Development will play a critical role in shaping our vision and executing strategic initiatives, including the development of the Hogan’s Alley Block, acquisition of properties to expand the Hogan’s Alley Society Community Land Trust portfolio, and other affordable housing and social infrastructure projects.

About You

You have a minimum of 5–10 years’ experience managing the real estate development process from visioning to developer partnership to construction and completion; successful navigation of municipal approvals processes; experience with funding processes at all levels of government; proficiency in creating development proformas and assessing financial feasibility; knowledge of community land trust models; experience with property acquisition and portfolio growth strategies; experience with neighbourhood revitalization; and experience with affordable rental housing development is an asset.

You bring strong consultative and relationship-building skills, along with a demonstrated commitment to anti-oppression, equity, and intersectional approaches. You demonstrate an understanding of the impacts of colonialism, residential schools, anti-Black racism, and urban renewal and displacement in Canada, as well as the historical and contemporary experiences of Black communities, and an interest in how these histories continue to shape housing inequities today. You bring relevant professional, community, academic, and/or lived experience connected to social justice, equity, and affordable housing development. Demonstrated experience working with Black communities, Black-serving organizations, or Black-led initiatives is considered an asset.

Key Responsibilities

The Director of Community Real Estate Development will be responsible for overseeing all HAS development projects and advancing the growth of the HAS Community Land Trust portfolio in accordance with approved visions, budgets, scope, and schedules.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Lead early feasibility studies and assess potential partnership, acquisition, and development opportunities.
  • Identify and support the acquisition of properties that align with the strategic growth of the Hogan’s Alley Society Community Land Trust portfolio.
  • Guide project strategy, planning, approvals, budgets, schedules, consultant teams, and delivery milestones.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with development partners, consultants, funders, government, rights holders, community stakeholders, and HAS leadership.
  • Apply anti-racism, equity, and community accountability principles to development planning, partnership decisions, and project implementation.
  • Support community engagement strategies in collaboration with HAS staff and partners.
  • Oversee financial feasibility, development proformas, project budgets, cost tracking, and reporting.
  • Provide clear updates and recommendations to the Executive Director, senior leadership, and Board.
  • Support internal capacity-building, knowledge transfer, and development systems within HAS.

This position requires a degree from a recognized educational institution in real estate, architecture, planning, finance, law, business, or another related field. A minimum of five (5–10) years of experience. The individual must be able to lead multiple initiatives, communicate and negotiate with nonprofit and private sector developer partners, communicate well with community partners, and interpret and apply legislation as it pertains to all aspects of the role. Demonstrated ability to assess the potential impacts of development decisions on Black communities and to integrate community-informed perspectives into strategic planning, partnership development, and decision-making processes. Experience working with municipalities within Metro Vancouver is an asset.

HAS is committed to developing an organization that reflects the communities we serve. We actively encourage applications from members of groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity. We thank all applicants for their submissions. Please note that only those shortlisted for interviews will be contacted.

HAS is committed to providing an accessible recruitment process. Applicants are encouraged to identify any access needs related to the application, interview, or selection process. We will work collaboratively with applicants to identify accessibility supports, communication methods, and participation options throughout recruitment. Please contact HR@hogansalleysociety.org with any accessibility-related questions or requests.
