Job description

The Opportunity

Designs leads and conducts behavioural and evaluation research using best practices aimed at supporting the design implementation and development of effective Provincial safety policies & regulations products programs and other initiatives that lead to increased market participation safety behaviour (compliance) and safety system outcomes. Works closely with internal and external stakeholders including senior leadership to translate communicate and apply research findings into action to support Technical Safety BCs strategy and to achieve safety outcomes in British Columbia.

Reports to: Director Safety Behaviour & Management Approaches

As an Senior Behavioral Scientist you will be

  • Responsible for advancing the organizations strategy for safety behaviour through the generation of actionable behavioural research insights and the successful implementation of behavioural interventions in the Enforcement portfolio and other key organizational business areas.
  • works as an expert advisor to senior organizational decision-makers and project leaders to design research and evaluation activities that meet organizational and project needs and follow best practices in social-behavioural research methods and design.
  • Independently designs leads and conducts research behavioural insights projects and program evaluations using various study designs and evidence-based techniques.
  • Leads and contributes to executive and board-level reporting presentations and business cases in support of departmental needs and initiatives.
  • Applies a programmatic and systems view to behaviour change
  • Works collaboratively and cross-functionally on data collection analysis and reporting from data sources both internal and external to the organization including:
  • Extracts and analyzes existing administrative records and systems data
  • Designs the collection of new quantitative or qualitative datasets (i.e. survey research in-field observation or behaviour data via sample plans etc.)
  • Conducts secondary research as required (e.g. literature reviews grey literature from other jurisdictions or sources etc.)
  • Identifies patterns in data and expertly derives meaning to translate research findings into actionable insights based on a deep understanding of the safety system (i.e. current duty holder segments stakeholders the contexts in which they work and how this relates to existing policy & regulatory structures programs products and services).
  • Regularly presents and communicates qualitative and quantitative data and insights in clear and innovative ways to effectively reach and influence target audiences and optimize uptake in decision-making processes including at senior leadership levels.

Knowledge Skills & Experience

  • Masters Degree or above in psychology behavioural science statistics or a related field in the social and behavioural sciences.5-7 years of experience working in an academic or applied research settings including:
    • Designing and conducting needs assessment process and/or outcome evaluations;
    • Conducting literature searches and environmental scans;
    • Designing and deploying surveys and analyzing survey data;
    • Conducting and/or analyzing interview or focus group data;
    • Extracting and analyzing data from administrative databases and records;
    • Conducting and analyzing data obtained using experimental or semi-experimental research designs;
    • Experience working on behavioural insights/nudging or human-centric design projects (strongly preferred)
  • Proven experience leading and managing projects in a self-directed manner; detail-oriented with excellent project management skills.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships in stakeholder-rich environments
  • Experience working in a related regulatory setting is highly preferred.
  • Superior interpersonal skills; ability to exercise a high degree of tact and confidentiality when dealing with sensitive data
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills and knowledge of best practices (i.e. content and framework analyses descriptive analyses correlational and
  • regression analyses evaluation design evaluative methodologies).
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite; CRM and other software an asset
  • Excellent data visualization knowledge translation and verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • Experience using statistical processing software like SPSS R Tableau Qlik Excel or equivalent
  • Experience using qualitative processing software like NVivo MAXQDA Excel or equivalent
  • Experience using AI tools to support the design analysis or reporting on research initiatives and evaluation programs an asset
