Position Summary

The Manager, Agriculture Competitions, is a member of the Agriculture and Western Events department, responsible for managing agriculture competitions/programming and the development of new competitions, ensuring that they not only meet but exceed guest expectations by creating inspired spaces that feature animals, industry showcases, competitions and programs that develop youth.

The successful candidate will work closely with volunteers, exhibitors, associations, industry leaders, and partners to achieve departmental and organizational goals.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Directly manage and lead a team of professionals in the execution of Agriculture and Western Event Programming.
  • Ensure business goals meet or exceed programming expectations and that these programs are executed to the highest standards.
  • Inspire others by demonstrating personal inspiration and excitement for the organization’s vision and direction and sharing that passion with teams.
  • Participate actively in cross-organizational management groups to identify and drive new programming.
  • Represent the company at various business/industry functions to continually develop and strengthen industry relationships, increase knowledge of emerging industry trends, and promote the Calgary Stampede brand, its venues and services.
  • Function as a management team member with the ability to inspire, motivate and lead a dynamic team.
  • Engages in conversations/discussions with team members regarding performance and development plans on a regular basis, and provides mentoring and coaching to develop team members to their potential
  • Documenting, strengthening, managing, and executing against all Calgary Stampede animal welfare codes. Continuous improvement of our animal welfare codes through review, analysis and conducting regular operational and risk management reviews.
  • Provide leadership to various internal and external stakeholders, creating engaging environments of professionalism and mutual respect.
  • Negotiate agreements and proposals.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to a variety of internal and external clients and stakeholders.
  • Act as liaison for the program committee to ensure the successful execution of the event/program.
  • Participate in committee meetings and play an active role in cooperatively leading decisions and program elevation forward through planning and budgeting.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, the community, Calgary Stampede, and the Calgary Stampede Foundation regarding community event requests.
  • Serve as staff liaison, participating in committee meetings and playing an active role in cooperatively leading decisions, planning, and budgeting. Liaise with stakeholders (volunteers and staff) through effective communication.
  • Engage a network of contacts in a variety of industries within agriculture and education to ensure an awareness of current industry trends.
  • Develop, manage, and maximize the investment of operating and program budgets and related reporting requirements.
  • Ensures all competition protocols are adhered to and executed to the highest level of standards.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be able to drive programming outcomes and be leadership-oriented. He/she will have a degree/certificate in Business Administration, Communication, Education, Agriculture or a related field from an accredited university or college, as well as the following:

  • Knowledge and expertise in agriculture marketing, competition sporting events, recreational events, and livestock exhibitions and showcases.
  • Project management
  • Budgeting and Financial Management
  • Strong execution and delivery skills.
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills, including the ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • A working knowledge of the EBMS system is an asset.
