About Hogan’s Alley Society

Hogan’s Alley Society is a Vancouver-based non-profit dedicated to advancing the social, political, economic, and cultural well-being of people of African descent (Black people).

We do this through inclusive housing, community programs, and public education. Our work also focuses on restoring and celebrating the Black presence in Vancouver and addressing the impacts of displacement and systemic racism.

Position Summary

As a Community Engagement & Events Assistant, you’ll play a key role in supporting HAS’s community-building, public education, and outreach activities throughout the summer. Working closely with our team, you will help coordinate events, assist with Hogan’s Alley Walking Tours, and contribute to communications and outreach efforts.

There will be three (3) positions. One position will be responsible for managing Hogan's Alley Society's social media.

Duration: July 6, 2026 - August 28, 2026 (8 weeks)

Special Notes

The position includes in-person attendance at events such as booth activations that take place in the evenings and weekends.

The Community Animator that manages social media will be required to attend events to capture content.

The successful candidates must be available to complete the full eight-week internship.

This is an excellent opportunity for youth passionate about community development, social justice, cultural engagement, and event planning.

Skill Building: Develop practical skills in event planning, facilitation, outreach, and communications—ideal for students in sociology, community development, social work, or related fields. Networking: Connect with local leaders, organizations, and professionals in Vancouver’s non-profit sector.

What You’ll Do

Community Outreach & Relationship Support:

Engage with Black community members, partner organizations, and event participants. Maintain and update contact lists and communication tools. Support volunteer engagement during programs.

Event & Program Support:

Assist with planning, logistics, and on-site implementation of events and workshops. Prepare materials, coordinate supplies, and help with set-up and take-down. Welcome participants and partners at events.

Public Education Activities:

Organize webinars, workshops, and Hogan’s Alley Walking Tours. Create accessible promotional materials and manage registrations. Provide on-site support during tours, ensuring accessibility and participant wayfinding.

Research, Feedback & Reporting:

Collect participant feedback and evaluation data. Summarize findings to inform future programming. Assist with light administrative tasks such as note-taking and record organization.

Contribute to a Culture of Care:

Demonstrate respect, inclusion, and cultural awareness in all interactions. Support an environment grounded in anti-oppression and collaboration.

What We’re Looking For

Required (training and mentorship provided):

Interest in community engagement, social justice, or cultural programming Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work collaboratively and take initiative Comfort working in diverse communities Organizational skills and attention to detail Availability for occasional evenings or weekends

Nice to Have:

Experience with social media content creation Event planning or customer service experience Basic research or data entry skills Lived experience as part of the Black community or other racialized communities
