Salisbury Composite High serves approximately 1,490 students in grades 10 to 12, with 68 teaching staff and 23 support staff. The school is located in Sherwood Park, AB. These students may have physical, sensory or behavioural challenges, or medical conditions requiring specialized accommodations. The focus of the program is to build functional communication skills that enhance the quality of life within a safe and structured learning environment, with regular routines and close supervision.JOB SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Principal, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) will apply medical nursing processes, sound judgement, and problem solving in providing medical care to students in alignment with their medical plan. The position plays an important role in supporting school attendance for children with ongoing medical needs and works in collaboration with the student’s medical team and family/caregiver, and Division staff. The LPN is guided by their medical education, related training, experience, and Division administrative procedures. Working with the school’s multi-disciplinary team, the LPN supports the educational programming for assigned students and may be involved in supporting universal and targeted supports for other students in a classroom setting. KEY RESPONSIBILITIESMedical Care and AssistanceProvide ongoing personal and physical care and medical assistance to students.Provide specialized medical services such as but not limited to:Life threatening; medically fragile, diabetes, seizures,Assistance with catheterization; G-tube or specialized feeding,Manual insulin delivery via insulin pump,Monitor oral intake, activity level, and absorption of bowels, and make decisions for insulin delivery and medication administration (dosage determination),Complete charting for medical needs and monitoring site for insulin delivery,Respiratory therapy interventions,Toileting: diapering, colostomy bag care and the disposal of biohazards.Dressing, grooming, and attending to general personal hygiene of students.Lifting and carrying non-ambulatory students into and out of specialized equipment (e.g., walkers, wheelchairs, toilets, commodes, sensory equipment and standing frames).Monitor students throughout the day to ensure safety, anticipate needs, and intervene as needed.Guides and monitors the care provided by unlicensed care providers to ensure the child’s physical and medical needs are met.Assist students in adapting to the classroom, developing social skills, self-esteem, independence, implementing regulation supports, and interacting with others.Ensure students have the necessary materials to complete classwork, and aid in completing classroom work and activities.As part of the collaborative classroom team, support other students, as needed.Communication and CollaborationMaintaining accurate and up-to-date records and documentation, ensuring compliance with legislation and Division administrative procedures.Ensure medical documentation is shared with school and division staff and integrated into students’ individualized program plans.Attend and participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings, case conferences and professional development activities, as determined by school and division staff.Collaborate with the school and division team on the goals, objectives, and strategies for individualized programming plans.Demonstrate appreciation for, and understanding of, protocol, discretion, and professionalism.Maintain strict confidentiality and security of student records and information.QUALIFICATIONS Education LPN DiplomaDiabetic training and G-Tube TrainingLPN designation and membership in good standing with College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPN).Experience 2 years’ professional experience working with individuals with complex needs.
