Director, Construction - SportChek

What you’ll do
As Director, Construction for SportChek, you will lead the national delivery of construction projects across Canada, overseeing a portfolio that includes new stores, relocations, and complex renovations within active retail environments.
This portfolio consists of:
• Renovations typically ranging from $500K to $2M
• New builds and relocations typically ranging from $5M to $9M
• All projects delivered as tenant fit-ups within landlord-controlled environments
Reporting to the AVP, Design & Construction, you will be accountable for end-to-end execution across all provinces, ensuring projects are delivered on time, on budget, and aligned with SportChek’s evolving brand and customer experience strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Lead National Construction Delivery
• Lead delivery of SportChek’s national capital program across all provinces, including new builds, relocations, and renovations
• Ensure consistent performance across schedule, budget, and quality metrics
• Oversee complex, phased renovations in live retail environments, minimizing disruption to store operations
Build and Lead a National Team
• Lead and develop a team of Project Managers and Coordinators located across Canada
• Establish clear expectations, drive accountability, and enable consistent execution across regions
• Build team capability and structure to support a growing, national portfolio
Drive Project Planning, Estimation, and Delivery Strategy
• Partner with Real Estate and Leasing teams to support Schedule C development, including scope definition and budgeting
• Lead the creation of detailed cost estimates, project scopes, and value engineering strategies
• Determine and implement appropriate construction delivery models (Construction Management, Design-Build, Stipulated Sum) based on project complexity
Manage Contracts, Vendors, and Execution Risk
• Oversee procurement and administration of construction contracts and consultant agreements
• Manage relationships with general contractors, architects, engineers, and vendors nationwide
• Ensure governance across cost, schedule, safety, quality, and contract compliance
• Proactively manage risks associated with phased construction and tenant fit-up projects
Drive Cross-Functional Alignment
• Serve as the key construction partner to SportChek brand leadership, Operations, Real Estate, and Store Development teams
• Align construction execution with brand strategies, merchandising timelines, and store operational needs
• Act as a senior escalation point to resolve issues efficiently and maintain project momentum
Enable Operational Excellence Through Systems & Reporting
• Lead the adoption and discipline of project management systems, reporting frameworks, and dashboards
• Ensure consistent tracking of performance metrics across the portfolio
• Drive a culture of data-driven decision-making, transparency, and efficiency
• Enable Project Managers to operate effectively through clear processes, tools, and governance

What you bring

• 12+ years of progressive experience in construction, with a strong focus on national, multi-site retail projects

• Proven track record of leading construction departments or large teams within retail organizations

• Demonstrated experience delivering projects across multiple provinces within Canada

• Strong background in retail design and construction, with an understanding of brand standards and customer experience requirements

• Deep expertise in:

• Construction delivery methods (CM, Design-Build, Stipulated Sum)

• Construction contracts and procurement strategies

• Complex renovation phasing in operating stores

• Cost estimation, scoping, and value engineering

• Leasing coordination and Schedule C development

• Strong financial acumen with experience managing multi-million-dollar capital programs

• Highly effective cross-functional leader with the ability to influence senior stakeholders

• Strong focus on systems, reporting, and enabling high-performing teams to execute efficiently at scale

Broadband Salary Range: 98,000.00 - 163,000.00 CAD Annual

Our typical hiring range is between 140,000.00 - 160,000.00 CAD per annum. Salary decisions are also dependent on other factors such as your experience, job-related knowledge, skills and competencies, market location, industry benchmarks, internal equity and other role-specific requirements
