Job descriptionDirector, People and Culture | Steward of People, Mission, Culture & Spirituality (Founding Role) The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie (St. Joseph’s Neighbourhood) | North Bay, Ontario Some roles are about managing people.
Others are about shaping how a community lives its values.
This is not a traditional HR role. This is a rare opportunity to design and steward a values-driven workplace and community from the ground up — in close partnership with the Executive Director / Lead Integrator, the Sisters’ Leadership Team, and a committed group of lay leaders.
St. Joseph’s Neighbourhood is entering a rare and formative chapter: the intentional transformation of a historic Motherhouse into a mission-anchored neighbourhood of care, belonging, hospitality, and spiritual life.
We are seeking a founding Steward of People, Mission, Culture and Spirituality — a senior, integrative people leader who will hold responsibility for the human, cultural, and spiritual fabric of the organization as it moves from vision into lived reality.
Why this role is different
You will help shape an organization where mission is not symbolic, but embedded in decisions, systems, employee relations, and daily behaviour.
You will integrate people strategy, culture, mission, leadership development, and spirituality into a coherent whole.
You will work at the enterprise level — influencing governance, leadership practice, and long-term sustainability, not just policies and programs.
You will help steward a living legacy — honouring the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph while supporting its expression in a shared-leadership future.
This role is for someone who has already mastered the mechanics of HR and is now drawn to meaning, depth, and impact.
CA $95K /yr to $124K /yr
The work you will steward As the Director of People and Culture / Steward of People, Mission, Culture and Spirituality, you will hold responsibility for:
People & Workforce Stewardship
Workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, retention, and succession
Labour relations in a unionized environment, including grievance resolution and collective bargaining preparation
Employment policy, compliance, and people risk management
Leadership development, mentoring, and manager capability-building
Culture, Mission & Values Integration
Embedding mission and values into all people practices and organizational systems
Leading culture diagnostics, listening processes, and engagement strategies
Designing recognition, storytelling, rituals, and symbols that reinforce identity and belonging
Serving as organizational guardian of mission, values, and charism
Leading mission integration and formation initiatives in partnership with Sisters and lay leaders
Supporting leaders and managers through organizational change, ambiguity, and transition
Designing and delivering leadership development (values-based leadership, conflict resolution, decision-making)
Advancing equity, inclusion, belonging, and holistic wellbeing
Spiritual & Pastoral Life
Holding enterprise-level accountability for spiritual expression, pastoral care, and faith-informed life enrichment
Ensuring spiritual care is accessible, inclusive, intentional, and aligned with mission and values
Integrating reflection, ritual, accompaniment, and meaning-making into everyday organizational life
Who this role will resonate with You may be a strong fit if you:
Are seeking a capstone leadership role — one focused on stewardship, legacy, and long-term impact rather than career advancement
Have senior HR leadership experience in a mission-driven, values-based, healthcare, nonprofit or multi-service community-focused organization
Are deeply comfortable working alongside boards, sponsors, or faith-based leadership
Understand organizational culture as something that must be designed, modeled, and protected
Possess one of the following designations: CPHR L, CHRP, CHRE
Have credibility in labour relations and are skilled in principled, relationship-based negotiation
Are deeply experienced in culture-building, leadership development, and organizational change
Are values-driven and comfortable integrating mission, spirituality, and meaning into professional life
A formal theological or divinity degree is not required; however, the ability to respectfully steward faith-based traditions and support qualified spiritual care leadership are essential.
