Most people avoid investigations.
We built a role around them.
At Hutton Safety Group, we’re looking for someone who gets genuinely fired up by figuring out what really happened. Not the surface-level answer. Not the version written to close a file. The real story underneath the event.
If you’re the type of person who sees an incident and immediately starts pulling threads, asking better questions, spotting system failures, and connecting dots others miss, keep reading.
This role is investigation-focused, but not investigation-only. You’ll also support our advisor team on active projects across industrial, construction, and energy environments to continue building your operational knowledge, field exposure, and credibility. The stronger your understanding of how work actually happens, the stronger your investigations become.
This is not a clipboard compliance role.
This is for someone who wants to become exceptional at incident investigation.
About Hutton Safety Group
We act as the safety department for companies that don’t have one. When incidents happen, clients call us because they need more than paperwork. They need someone who can step into difficult situations, uncover the real causes, navigate tough conversations, and help leadership make meaningful changes that actually reduce risk.
Most investigations are completed remotely through interviews, document review, photo analysis, timelines, and evidence gathering. But when the situation demands it, you’ll be expected to mobilize quickly and head to site.
Sometimes that means a same-day departure to a facility, construction project, or incident scene in Alberta, BC, or Saskatchewan. If you need every day perfectly predictable, this role will feel uncomfortable. If you thrive under pressure and like meaningful work that matters, you’ll probably love it.
What You’ll Do
- Lead investigations from initial response through final closeout
- Conduct interviews with workers, supervisors, and leadership teams
- Review evidence including reports, procedures, permits, FLHAs, photos, and timelines
- Analyze events using SCAT and other root cause methodologies
- Identify both immediate causes and deeper system failures
- Write reports that are sharp, credible, and actionable
- Develop corrective actions that improve operations, not just satisfy paperwork
- Present findings and facilitate difficult conversations with clients
- Support field advisors and project teams to continue building operational understanding
- Respond to serious or high-risk events with professionalism and urgency
What You Bring
- 3+ years of investigation experience in industrial, construction, oil & gas, utilities, manufacturing, or related sectors
- Strong understanding of SCAT methodology or equivalent root cause analysis systems
- Excellent written communication skills
- Strong interviewing ability and emotional intelligence
- Ability to stay calm and objective in high-pressure situations
- Strong critical thinking and pattern recognition skills
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel on short notice
This Role Is For You If:
- You love investigations enough that you read investigation reports for fun
- You care more about understanding failure than assigning blame
- You are naturally curious and ask better questions than most people
- You get frustrated by weak corrective actions and generic root causes
- You want to specialize and become known for this skillset
- You like autonomy and don’t need someone managing every minute of your day
- You can walk into uncomfortable situations and still communicate professionally
