This role is based in our
Burnaby
office and supports projects primarily across Western Canada.
Compensation Salary range: $75,000 to $125,000+ (depending on experience level). P.Eng. designation with EGBC or equivalent Canadian/US designation is preferred and responsibilities will be adjusted based on experience.
About the Role This role offers the opportunity to gain exposure to a diverse range of building types, materials, and project scales while working closely with experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams. You’ll be involved throughout the project lifecycle and develop both technical and practical design skills.
Responsibilities
Deliver structural designs from concept through detailed design, tender, and construction across a variety of building types and materials (mass timber, light‑frame wood, masonry, concrete, and steel).
Collaborate with team members to produce coordinated, high‑quality structural deliverables.
Perform designs independently, check the design work of others, and conduct peer reviews.
Coordinate with architects, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams to develop integrated design solutions.
Participate in project meetings and contribute to technical discussions and decision‑making.
Complete structural assessments and contribute to technical reports for existing buildings and structures.
Support construction administration activities, including field reviews and travel to project sites as required.
Maintain quality assurance practices and documentation standards across all project phases.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and share knowledge with the team.
Stay current with industry trends, materials, and emerging technologies.
Support and collaborate with team members across ISL offices.
Develop and utilize tools such as custom spreadsheets to improve efficiency and consistency.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from a Civil engineering program.
Registration, or eligibility for registration, as an E.I.T.
Minimum of 2 years of relevant local or international structural engineering experience.
Familiarity with structural analysis software (e.g., Risa, S‑Frame, RFEM, WoodWorks Sizer or other similar).
Knowledge and application of structural theory and the National Building Code of Canada (NBC 2020), and Canadian Design Standards (O86, S16, A23.3).
Desirable Assets
Experience with prefabrication of mass timber or light‑frame structures.
Master’s degree in structural, seismic or mass timber.
Awareness of international codes and current research trends in structural engineering.
