Boiler Operator 3rd Class, Facilities

Summary:

The boiler operator supports the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the central heating and cooling plant infrastructure at the university. Working both independently and as part of a skilled team, the role is responsible for the operation, monitoring, and basic troubleshooting of boilers, chillers, and associated systems that provide essential utility services across campus. This position maintains continuous plan operations and responds to system demands in alignment with regulatory requirements, university safety standards, and industry leading practices. The operator contributes to consistent utility service delivery and the ongoing performance of critical plant infrastructure.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates boilers, chillers, and auxiliary plant systems to support continuous and safe plant operations in alignment with safety requirements, operational guidelines, and regulatory codes.
  • Monitors control systems, responds to alarms, and troubleshoots operational issues to support continuous and safe operation of plant equipment.
  • Serves as a first point of contact during off-hours, applying fundamental troubleshooting techniques to identify and secure faults.
  • Assists with essential fire procedure duties and emergency response actions.
  • Plans and conducts start-ups and shutdowns of boiler, chiller, and auxiliary equipment in accordance with established procedures.
  • Conducts routine operational rounds, records readings, performs inspections, and documents system performance data in support of preventative maintenance.
  • Supports preventive and predictive maintenance activities contributing to reliability-centered maintenance objectives.
  • Supports the planning and execution of maintenance tasks in collaboration with other trades and plant staff, including activities such as interpreting design drawings and estimating work requirements.
  • Provides recommendations for improvements or repairs and communicates material requirements to support efficient workflow and plant operations.
  • Identifies hazards and applies safe work practices to minimize risk to personnel, equipment, and plant operations.
  • Contributes to dependable service delivery in collaboration with engineers, plant staff, contractors, and other campus partners.
  • Contributes to workplace initiatives and continuous improvement activities related to plant operations.
  • Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.
  • Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement.
  • Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position.

Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid 4th, 3rd, or 2nd Class Power Engineer Certificate and a Refrigeration Engineer Certificate.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Minimum of three years of experience as an assistant engineer in a medium- to large-scale high-pressure steam plant.
  • Experience with large multi-chiller systems is preferred.
  • Experience with work order systems, preventive maintenance programs, and diagnostic maintenance tools is an asset.
  • Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities to meet timelines.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to operate power tools and perform frequent physical labour, including lifting, carrying, kneeling, and prolonged standing.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to steam systems, confined spaces, extreme heat and elevated work areas.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and technical documents.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
