We are currently looking for a Industrial Mechanical Estimator to join our team in Calgary, Alberta! The Industrial Mechanical Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive cost estimates and proposals for mechanical and multi-discipline industrial projects within the oil and gas sector across Western Canada. Supporting Whaler Industrial Contracting’s general, mechanical, and civil scopes, this role involves analyzing project requirements, interpreting technical documentation, and developing detailed pricing that aligns with client specifications and company standards. comprehensive, risk-aware, and reflective of current market conditions, contributing to successful project execution from bid through to completion while supporting the company’s growth and reputation for delivering tailored construction and management solutions to uphold Trotter & Morton’s commitment to excellence.

Key Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates and proposals for industrial
mechanical projects within the oil and gas sector. - Review and interpret drawings, specifications, and bid documents, including
P&IDs, isometrics, and mechanical layouts. - Perform detailed quantity take-offs for piping, equipment, structural
components, and associated mechanical scopes. - Develop labour, equipment, and material cost estimates, including
subcontractor and vendor pricing. - Solicit, evaluate, and incorporate quotations from suppliers and
subcontractors. - Identify project risks, constraints, and opportunities, incorporating them into
pricing and bid strategy. - Collaborate with operations, project managers, and field personnel to validate
scope, constructability, and execution approach. - Participate in bid reviews, estimate presentations, and client discussions as
required. - Maintain and update estimating databases, unit rates, and historical cost
information. - Support project handover to operations, ensuring clarity of scope,
assumptions, inclusions, and exclusions. - Monitor market conditions, labour trends, and material pricing to ensure
competitive and current estimates. - Perform other duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities
- Strong understanding of industrial mechanical systems, including piping, equipment installation, and structural/mechanical interfaces.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, P&IDs, isometrics, and specifications with a high level of accuracy.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
- Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally and engage with clients and vendor
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines.
- Solid understanding of construction methodologies, project execution strategies, and cost drivers in industrial environments.
- Commercial awareness with the ability to assess project risk, margins, and
contractual implications. - Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and take initiative in a fast paced environment.
Knowledge and Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field; equivalent industry experience will be considered.
- 3–7+ years of experience in industrial mechanical estimating, preferably within
oil and gas or heavy industrial construction. - Practical field experience in mechanical construction (e.g., piping, fabrication, equipment installation) is considered a strong asset.
- Knowledge of construction contracts, project delivery methods, and industrial project lifecycle.
- Experience working with estimating software and ERP/project management systems is an asset.
- Journeyperson certification in a mechanical trade (e.g., pipefitting, welding, millwright) is considered a strong asset
