is looking for a Senior Producer with experience in news, political coverage, investigative and long-form audio journalism, and podcasting. This role would require working on multiple projects in parallel, with tight deadlines, and covering some of the biggest news stories in CBC’s portfolio.

The work is key to the CBC News Podcasting mission – to create and amplify CBC’s journalism in the podcasting space.

This is a full-time position, Monday to Friday, primarily daytime hours but with flexibility required for working with team members coast-to-coast, in our international bureaus, and to respond to breaking news developments. It is a hybrid role, requiring you to be in the workplace at least three days a week at any CBC location in Canada.

Please note: Strong internal candidate.

About CBC News Podcasts:

We work with CBC News teams across the country to help support local always-on podcasts, network audio and video teams with a presence in podcasting, and to create and develop original news podcasts for Canadian audiences. We work in deep collaboration with the CBC Podcast Audience Growth Hub, CBC Podcasts and CBC News Studios to create audience-focussed podcast content, and best practices and skills around podcasting among CBC teams.

About the Role:

In this role, you will work on multiple projects, including an always-on weekly news podcast, as well as overseeing multiple contributors in the development, production and support of new and existing podcast projects. You may help create the program pillars and formats of a new series or the episodes within, or oversee the execution and support of other projects already in progress. This will mean thinking about the podcasting audience first in all your content decisions, always privileging the superpowers of podcast storytelling, and marrying all that up with a healthy dose of love for and experience with CBC News’ Journalistic Standards and Practices. You may be telling stories, mentoring on-mic talent, writing scripts, or keeping teams of podcasters on time and on budget. You will be responsible for audience growth strategy and execution. We’ve got an ambitious plan for content production, and would be thrilled to find a Senior Producer who thrives in a deadline-driven environment, one who embodies both podcast storytelling vibes, and newsroom hustle.

You’re responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Producing of a weekly news podcast offering in both audio and video

  • Contributing to the development of news podcasting feed or feeds

  • Pitching and proving show- and series-level podcast ideas

  • Overseeing the work of teams of creatives in different roles

  • Creating uniquely Canadian news content that will soar in a crowded podcast environment

  • Leading editorial discussions about podcast-first story selection

  • Helping teams write for the ear and conduct interviews for long form audio

  • Vetting scripts and storyediting

  • Ensuring best practices for podcast packaging and promotion are maintained

  • Distilling big stories into the emotional touchstones that compel and propel podcast episodes

  • Writing and structuring series and season arcs with detailed outlines

  • Writing and structuring episode scripts as needed

  • Vetting and story editing scripts through the whole scripting life cycle (draft to final)

  • Managing multiple deadlines, and ensuring that teams working in parallel to produce episodes are doing the same

  • Presenting content on-mic as needed

  • Liaising with in-house Podcast Audience Growth, MarComms and Publicity teams to understand how the content you contribute to can be best amplified for podcast audiences

  • Casting and coaching on mic-talent including hosts and storytellers

  • Editing, mixing and publishing weekly podcast episodes

  • Provide notes and feedback on complex episode mixes

  • Make data driven decisions about editorial focus, packaging and promotion

  • Executing CBC News Podcasts’ strategy for creating audio and video podcast content that centres Canadian audiences, Canadian perspectives and CBC’s journalism and journalists

About You:

  • You have a track record of producing audio storytelling and are knowledgeable and passionate about the podcasting industry

  • You have experience leading teams of creative contributors, working on tight deadlines

  • You are data driven, and use metrics to inform podcast development and growth tactics

  • You are a news nerd, who follows national and international events and politics, and has a passion for responding to developing news in the way that will best serve your show and your audience.

  • You are knowledgeable about the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, or have experience with similar standards in another large journalistic organization

  • You’re a skilled storyteller who loves to write and produce for the ear, and also understands that podcast content needs to be successful on multiple platforms

  • You know how to build scenes, create tension, and reveal something the audience connects with, and have experience in gathering and editing audio elements

  • You’re a critical thinker who is equally comfortable working on a daily news format and a long-form narrative

  • You’re able to work in a high-pressure environment with deadline constraints and under public scrutiny

  • You forge positive working relationships where you value collaboration, transparency, respect and inclusiveness

  • You value working on teams where each member is accountable for themselves, and accountable to each other.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.

  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
