What’s the role

Shell Canada is seeking for a Lubricants Technical Advisor – Mining (also known as Senior Technical Advisor - Mining internally). This role is exclusively dedicated to supporting the oil sands business. The ideal candidate would be based in Fort McMurray; however, candidates located elsewhere in Alberta will also be considered.

The Lubricants Technical Advisor – Mining provides expert guidance on lubricant applications, performance optimization, and equipment reliability. The role offers on‑site support to maintenance and reliability teams, with a focus on troubleshooting, inspection services, identifying cost‑reduction opportunities, and enhancing asset performance through value‑improvement initiatives. This is a remote role, meaning you will work from a home office when not in the field, with frequent business travel (50–60%) to Fort McMurray, AB, to perform field‑based technical activities while engaging with Shell’s Platinum oil sands customer.

You collaborate closely with Shell’s sales teams and customers to:

  • Deliver tailored technical advice and product recommendations

  • Troubleshoot complex lubrication challenges in the field

  • Demonstrate the commercial and operational value of Shell’s lubricant solutions

  • Support the deployment of new technologies and services that enhance customer performance

Accountabilities:

  • Serve as the dedicated technical contact for a major oil sands mining customer

  • Provide front-line technical support, including problem-solving, application advice, and troubleshooting

  • Lead lubricant specification and application support for oil sands mining fleets and fixed‑plant assets, ensuring compliance with OEM requirements

  • Conduct lubrication assessments and surveys, identify rationalization opportunities, and lead field trials

  • Support maintenance and reliability teams with on-site inspections and value-driven improvement projects

  • Offer specialized expertise in automated lubrication systems and open gear lubrication.

  • Perform operational and shutdown inspections of critical mining equipment using diagnostic tools and techniques to advance reliability objectives

  • Deliver technical training to build product and application knowledge

  • Provide guidance on HSSE, occupational health, and product handling/disposal best practices, ensuring compliance with relevant local legislation

  • Escalate complex technical challenges to the Team Lead or the Product Application Specialist, collaborating on resolution

  • Utilize sales tools and standardized documentation templates in alignment with global standards to deliver Value-Led outcomes

  • Consistently act in accordance with Shell’s Global Business Principles, Code of Conduct, and HSSE standards and policies

What you bring

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Petroleum, or Chemical Engineering, or a diploma in Technology with a specialization in Industrial Heavy Equipment, Materials, Mechanical, Petroleum, or Chemical fields, or in any other related technical discipline

  • Professional certifications: Certified Lubrication Specialist (CLS), Machinery Lubrication Technician (MLT), Machine Lubricant Analyst (MLA), and/or Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic are highly valued

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in lubricants and their applications in mining/heavy construction

  • Experience in a customer-facing or technical sales support role is preferred

  • Extensive knowledge in mining, heavy construction, or related industries, with hands-on mechanical aptitude and strong critical thinking skills

  • Must be willing and able to travel 50–60%

  • Must have a valid driver’s license

  • Fluency in English
