Job description

The Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) is a progressive union representing approximately 30,000 paramedical, professional, and technical members. Our staff are committed to delivering high-quality services to our members. HSAA is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

The Position

Are you a strategic senior leader with expertise in finance, facilities, and technology, and a passion for driving organizational performance and sustainability? Do you thrive in complex environments where you can bring structure, insight, and innovation to critical operational functions?

HSAA is seeking a Director, Finance, Facilities & IT/IM to lead three core portfolios—Finance, Facilities, and Information Technology/Information Management (IT/IM)—while also overseeing Procurement, Risk Management, and Organizational Measurement.

Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as a member of the Senior Leadership team, you will play a key role in shaping organizational strategy and providing advice on financial stewardship, infrastructure and asset management, technology enablement, and enterprise risk.

You will lead the integration and modernization of Finance, Facilities, and IT/IM functions, ensuring they are efficient, sustainable, and aligned with organizational priorities. In doing so, you will build and develop a team, including managers, strengthening internal capacity and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • As a member of the Senior Leadership team, contribute to organizational strategy with the development of strategy for the functional areas, provide advice to the Executive Director and Board on financial sustainability, infrastructure and technology investment, and enterprise risk.
  • Lead long-term planning and strategy across capital investment, asset management, and technology infrastructure, and champion modernization initiatives including digital transformation and process improvement.
  • Provide leadership and oversight of Finance, Facilities, and IT/IM functions, ensuring strong financial stewardship, effective governance processes, and alignment of infrastructure and technology systems with organizational needs.
  • Oversee processes for financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, reporting, procurement, and internal controls to ensure accuracy, compliance, and audit readiness.
  • Lead enterprise risk management and ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory, privacy, and procurement requirements through effective frameworks and controls.
  • Strengthen organizational performance reporting through the development of measurement frameworks, KPIs, dashboards, and reporting tools that support data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.

What You Bring

You are an experienced senior leader with a strong background in finance, facilities, and/or technology, and a proven ability to lead integrated functions in complex organizations. You bring sound judgment, strategic thinking, and the ability to balance competing priorities while maintaining a focus on long‑term sustainability and organizational performance.

You are comfortable operating in environments with ambiguity and complexity, and you excel at translating financial, operational, and technical information into clear insights that support executive and Board‑level decision‑making.

You are a strong people leader who can build and develop high‑performing teams, foster collaboration across functions, and lead change initiatives that improve systems, processes, and service delivery.

You communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and are skilled at building credibility, influencing decisions, and aligning diverse perspectives in dynamic and sometimes sensitive environments.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field, along with a professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) required. A Master’s degree (e.g., MBA) is considered an asset.
  • 7–10 years of progressive leadership experience, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Experience leading multiple corporate service functions, including Finance, Facilities, IT/IM, Procurement, or Risk Management.
  • Strong understanding of governance, regulatory, and compliance frameworks within public or quasi‑public sector environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to support executive and Board‑level decision‑making through financial, operational, and strategic analysis.
  • Experience developing and implementing financial strategies, risk management frameworks, and performance measurement systems.
  • Strong ability to interpret and integrate complex financial, operational, and technology information to support organizational decision‑making.
  • Proven leadership capability, with experience building, developing, and leading multidisciplinary teams in complex environments.
  • Strong communication, relationship management, and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior executives, Boards, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience in a unionized or member‑based organization is considered an asset.

Your Core Competencies

  • Creative Problem Solving. You assess problems in new ways to achieve outcomes and solutions.
  • Drive for Results. You maximize resources to achieve organization goals while maintaining accountability to each other and stakeholders.
  • Systems Thinking. You understand broad perspectives, set goals to meet long‑term outcomes, and help others to see their role in achieving results.
  • Develop Self and Others. You are committed to learning and understanding the strategic importance of ongoing team development.
  • Agility. You anticipate and adapt to changing priorities and environments. You are resilient in times of uncertainty.
  • Develop Networks. You build connections and trust in relationships.
  • Build Collaboration. You lead and contribute to conditions that support teamwork, collaboration, consistency, and excellence.

What We Offer

Competitive Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Top Benefits: 100% employer‑paid benefits, flex spending account, and pension plan

Hours of Work: 35-hour work week

Learning & Development: Internal and external training support
