Job Summary
The UBC Super Resolution Microscopy Core (LSI Imaging Facility) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant / Technician 4 to support and deliver advanced bioimaging services (wide field confocal laser scanning stimulated emission depletion microscopy structured illumination microscopy single-molecule localization microscopy imaging analysis) in a shared multi-user research environment. The incumbent will train users provide technical support perform and analyze complex imaging experiments develop and optimize imaging protocols for new and existing technologies and support facility operations. This role requires independent judgment technical expertise in advanced optical microscopy and strong communication skills.

Organizational Status
This position will report directly to the Super Resolution Microscopy Core Facility Manager with dotted-line reporting to the Academic Director of the Facility. Works closely with graduate students postdoctoral fellows and faculty users in a multi-user research environment. Provides training and technical support to new users and trainees.

Work Performed

  • Provides training in the use of highly specialized bioimaging techniques (wide field confocal laser scanning stimulated emission depletion microscopy structured illumination microscopy single-molecule localization microscopy).

  • Provides training in the use of highly specialized imaging analysis programs on deconvolution FRAP FRET FLIM 3D rendering SPT 2D and 3D quantifications.

  • Independently operate maintain and perform routine quality control on widefield and confocal laser scanning microscopes in accordance with established protocols.

  • Apply advanced technical judgment to ensure optimal performance calibration and appropriate use of imaging systems.

  • Consult with users to design imaging-related experimental plans; operate advanced bioimaging systems; and execute and analyze complex imaging experiments.

  • Provide advanced technical and application support including troubleshooting of hardware software and experimental issues as they arise.

  • Provide technical and application support to the assisted microscope bookings.

  • Operate and maintain Biological Safety Level 2 tissue culture facility with the imaging facility to support live cell imaging research projects.

  • Perform complex live-cell imaging experiments involving chemical treatments temperature control humidity regulation and controlled gas environments.

  • Receive samples from facility users perform imaging and data analysis and report results in a clear and timely manner.

  • Track and document the technical progress of imaging-related activities and report to the Facility Manager as required.

  • Supervise and train undergraduate research assistants and new users in data collection and image analysis.

  • Assist in implementing and maintaining facility safety protocols (e.g. laser safety) and oversee proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste.

  • Participate in continuous workflow improvements and the evaluation of new imaging technologies.

  • Research the applicability of emerging imaging technologies and image analysis software relevant to the facility and provide recommendations to facility leadership.

  • Assist with the organization of complex academic and research activities within the facility (e.g. workshops and demonstrations).

  • Assist in data management of the facility.

Perform other related duties as required in support of the development and operation of the imaging facility.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent must be willing to pay attention to details be aware of pitfalls and willing to repeat when necessary to ensure data quality and system integrity. The incumbent will improve upon existing protocols and provide input into the direction of the facility.

Exercises a considerable amount of judgment responsibilities and initiative in determining work procedures and methods and coordinating the work of the facility. Poor decisions could delay the timely completion of the research projects compromise results obtained from experiments or be damaging to the reputation of the facility department or even University. Errors may result in misinterpretation of data in publications or reports potentially affecting research outcomes funding and decision-making.

Supervision Received
Works independently under general direction from the Facility Manager. Technical and strategic guidance provided as needed by the Facility Manager or leadership.

Supervision Given
Provides technical support instruction and training to facility users including students postdoctoral fellows and other researchers.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in life sciences with experience in bioimaging sample handling data collection and data processing.

  • Thorough knowledge of modern molecular biology techniques is an asset.

  • Strong background in optics and microscopy physics is an asset.

  • Experience with advanced bioimaging applications such as FLIM FRAP and FRET.

  • Experience with advanced bioimaging technologies confocal SMLM STED SIM.

  • Experience using bioimaging data analysis programs (such as Image J Imaris Hugens Pro).

  • Proficiency with standard office software and other job-related equipment.

  • Excellent oral and written communication analytical interpersonal organizational and record-keeping skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.

  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and in harmony with others within a team environment.

  • Demonstrated accuracy attention to detail and sound judgment.

  • Ability to multitask prioritize work and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to contribute to a respectful cooperative and supportive work environment.

  • Ability to exercise tact discretion and confidentiality.

  • Programming experience in MATLAB and/or Python for data analysis batch processing or workflow optimization is an asset.
