Job description

Peace Hills Trust is Canada’s largest and oldest First Nations-owned federally regulated financial institution and is also Canada’s only independent trust company. Driven by a vision to fulfill the unique financial needs of the Indigenous community, their sole shareholder, the Samson Cree Nation, incorporated Peace Hills Trust in November 1980.

Peace Hills Trust is a full-service, federally chartered trust company that provides financial services to indigenous and non-indigenous communities, businesses, and individuals across Canada. With a network of eight regional offices, Peace Hills Trust has $2.93 billion in assets under administration and is Canada’s largest First Nation-owned financial institution.

Peace Hills Trust’s corporate office is located in Edmonton, with its head office on the Samson Cree Nation in Maskwacis, Alberta. The company is widely respected for its relationship-based approach, community focus, and long-term commitment to the communities it serves.

The Opportunity

Peace Hills Trust is seeking a Director Commercial Lending to lead their commercial banking activities across the Southern Alberta region. This is an outstanding opportunity for a highly experienced and independent commercial lender who is motivated by community connection and client service excellence.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President Credit, the Director Commercial Lending is responsible for the overall performance of the regional office’s commercial banking operations, including business development, underwriting, credit and risk management, and growing a quality portfolio that reflects the company’s strategic goals.

The position is situated in the Calgary regional office located on reserve on Tsuut’ina lands and focuses on Peace Hills Trust’s niche market of providing lending and banking services to First Nation communities and their businesses.

The Ideal Candidate

As the ideal candidate, you are independent and resourceful, with a strong drive to succeed. Proactive, analytical and detail-oriented, you are known for your high level of integrity and accountability, as well as your ability to maintain and grow a quality book of commercial business.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities

  • Cultivate relationships to increase awareness, realize business opportunities, and expand Peace Hills Trust’s commercial business in Southern Alberta.
  • Source, develop, and grow profitable opportunities for new and existing commercial relationships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous customers.
  • Identify, negotiate, underwrite, and present high-quality credit proposals, demonstrating expertise in risk assessment, financial analysis, and credit structuring/solutions.
  • Work to achieve asset growth and profitability targets.
  • Manage relationships and overall credit portfolio, including PCAMLTF legislative requirements, loan draw files, renewals and annual reviews, financial statement analysis, and market trends.
  • Liaise with the Corporate Credit team to ensure continuity of customer service and the accuracy of credit and lending-related deals.
  • Protect company assets by ensuring compliance with Peace Hills Trust’s requirements, including security, control and reporting procedures.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of commercial lending experience, including risk assessment, financial analysis, and credit structuring/solutions.
  • Demonstrated success in business development and sales.
  • Strong business and financial acumen.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Direct experience with First Nations is preferred.
  • A relevant post‑secondary degree or diploma would be an asset.

Compliance

Final candidates will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Credit Check.

Peace Hills Trust is an equal opportunity employer committed to equity, diversity and inclusion; applications from all qualified individuals are welcome.

Compensation and Benefits

The competitive compensation package and comprehensive benefits plan will be shared with candidates during the interview process.

In compliance and consistency with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (“PIPEDA”) and Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), HumanEdge shall respect the privacy and confidentiality of all personal information provided directly or indirectly verbally, electronically or in print throughout the process of candidate engagement in our search assignments.
