About the Role
Working as part of the HR Operations team, and reporting to the Director, Payroll, the Payroll Specialist will assist in processing and distributing payrolls for 1,200+ employees in 21 total pay groups across North America.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately and efficiently process payroll, which will require understanding, interpreting and applying tax laws and government regulations to payroll and benefit deductions, incentive compensation and retirement funding;
- Review payroll transactions for completeness and reasonability;
- Research and investigate payroll discrepancies;
- Prepare special payments, complex pay and payroll deduction calculations;
- Manage and maintain timely compliance for payroll, legal and tax reporting filings;
- Support and assist with payroll-related SOX procedures and internal audits, ensuring payroll processes are in line with controls;
- Respond to information requests and assist in the implementation of key initiatives impacting payroll, including acquisitions of new assets/employees;
- Stay abreast and aware of new laws and regulations regarding payroll related issues;
- Assist in identifying recurring issues, problematic trends, and in recommending changes in basic procedures.
Knowledge and Experience Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration required; payroll certification is preferred;
- Minimum of 2 - 4 years of Canadian payroll experience covering all aspects of payroll processing, with at least two (2) years in a comparably complex company required;
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a large number of payrolls while working under tight deadlines;
- Flexible and adaptable: willing and able to change priorities to meet team goals;
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and sound judgment;
- Motivated problem solver with the ability to sort through issues to create and recommend improvements;
- Strong interpersonal skills to foster strong relationships at all levels in the organization;
- Ability to deal sensitively with confidential information;
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of US payroll preferred but not required;
- Experience working in a public and/or fast growth company;
- Understanding of collective agreement applications for payroll ;
- Expert use of Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) required and experience working with Ultipro (HRIS) is desirable.
Note: Offices continue to be central to collaboration and Brookfield’s identity. This position requires the employee to be on-site for a minimum of 4 days to perform most effectively. We will reassess the approach on a as needed basis.
