Job description

Ready to launch your career in environment and hydrogeology and contribute to meaningful projects from your very first day?

At ERM, you’ll step directly into hands‑on field work, real-world problem solving, and cutting‑edge environmental and hydrogeological investigations. You’ll work alongside experienced consultants who are committed to mentorship, technical excellence, and helping you build the foundations of a rewarding consulting career. If you’re looking for a role where you can learn quickly, deepen your technical skills, and make a measurable impact on environmental and hydrogeology projects, this is the opportunity for you.

Why This Role Matters

As a Consulting Associate, Hydrogeologist (Entry), you play a critical role in helping senior team members to understand and address complex subsurface challenges by collecting and compiling data. Your work supports the investigation, data collection and data compiling for assessing baseline hydrogeological conditions, site conceptual model development, risk assessment and risk management projects for mining sites. Your job contributes to risk reduction and regulatory compliance and helps advance ERM’s mission of shaping a more sustainable future.

What Your Impact Is

In this role, you will support hydrogeological site investigations across a variety of project sites. From collecting high‑quality field data, to assisting with groundwater flow assessments, to contributing to technical documentation, your work will directly support high‑quality project delivery and innovative environmental solutions. You’ll also gain essential experience toward professional registration, building a strong foundation for long‑term success in environmental consulting.

What You'll Bring

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in hydrogeology, environmental sciences, or geology (with hydrogeology courses).

  • Eligible for Engineer in training (E.I.T.)/Geologist in Training (G.I.T.) registration in Alberta or British Columbia (B.C).

  • Recent graduate and up to 2 years of experience, with strong enthusiasm for hands‑on field assignments.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including managing, organizing, and reviewing large datasets.

  • Experience preparing tables, figures, maps, and technical/ academic reports.

  • Foundational understanding of hydrogeology principles (e.g., groundwater flow, aquifer types, basic hydraulic testing).

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a consulting environment.

  • Ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, and perform effectively in a fast‑paced environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with high attention to detail in data recording and technical documentation.

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and adherence to Health & Safety protocols.

  • Willingness and ability to travel up 70%+.

  • Willingness to participate in extended field rotations, including up to 2+ weeks at remote mining or oil sands sites, often in variable climate conditions.

  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and good driving record with the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.

  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with coding languages (e.g., Python, VBA, R) and numerical modeling will be considered as an asset.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in extended field rotations, including up to 2+ weeks at remote mining or oil sands sites, often in variable climate conditions.

  • Participate in field programs that may require travel to remote locations by truck, All‑Terrain Vehicle (ATV), or helicopter, depending on site conditions and project needs.

  • Conduct fieldwork, including:

    Monitoring groundwater levels using manual measurement methods and dataloggers;

    Sampling groundwater for field parameter measurements and laboratory analysis;

    Hydraulic conductivity testing (e.g., slug tests, step‑drawdown tests, and constant‑rate pumping tests);

    Overseeing installation of groundwater monitoring wells and recording subsurface lithologies using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS);

    Ensuring all field procedures comply with safety requirements, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) standards, and project protocols.

  • Support technical and project management team on project planning activities, including preparation and implementation of technical and health and safety plans.

  • Record, organize, and interpret field data; assist in preparing technical deliverables such as reports, tables, charts, graphs, and hydrogeologic maps.

  • Adhere to project budgets, schedules, and scopes of work, and communicate proactively with the project team to support timely, high‑quality outcomes.

For the Consulting Associate, Hydrogeologist (Entry) position, the anticipated annual base pay is $63,000–$73,574 (CAD). Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, parental leave, medical, dental, vision, life, disability, AD&D insurance, 401(k) or RRSP/DPSP, and other applicable benefits to eligible employees.

Note: Bonuses, commissions, and other forms of additional compensation are not guaranteed and subject to the sole discretion of ERM and its policies and procedures.
