The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba is looking for an Indigenous Initiatives Implementation Manager. This position reports to the Associate Vice‑President (Indigenous) Students and plays an important role in the implementation, execution, and impact assessment of initiatives and coordination of operational and administrative support for OVPI regarding policies such as the Affixing Indigenous Citizenship, Membership, and Kinship Policy.

Important aspects of this work are privacy, confidentiality, creating a safe space for Indigenous students, faculty, staff, and the wider Indigenous community, developing positive relationships, along with the ability to coordinate, plan, set and meet project targets. To be successful in this role the manager requires a high level of collaboration, relationship‑building, and engagement with a variety of partners to effectively support OVPI and the Time for Action: Truth and Reconciliation Framework. The manager will also need to have strong organizational skills, exercise discretionary decision‑making, and establish effective working relations with internal and external partners.

Knowledge and experience with Indigenous cultures, knowledges, and traditions are essential to success in this role.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Five years of directly related experience in post‑secondary or non‑profit project administration and leadership are required.
  • Proven history working in a multi‑layered, complex organization is required.
  • Extensive experience, knowledge, competency with respect to Indigenous cultures, ways, and histories including ceremony and protocols are required.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, organizations, and governments and people is required.
  • Extensive experience in coordination and logistics is required.
  • Experience and ability to independently make decisions in a timely fashion is required.
  • Experience in building strategic partnerships with external organizations is required.
  • Experience in the planning, development and implementation of programs and policies is required.
  • Experience leading and managing teams is required.
  • Knowledge of UM, the province, and their relationship to Indigenous peoples preferred. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Visionary thinker with the ability to identify tactful and solution‑minded opportunities is required.
  • Strong project management skills are required.
  • Decision‑making, critical thinking, and building strategic partnerships are required.
  • Superior organization and prioritization skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise employees is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work, set priorities and deadlines, and chair meetings is required.
  • Excellent communications skills (verbal and written) and ability to communicate and present materials in an articulate, knowledgeable, and diplomatic manner are required.
  • Ability to write promotional content and develop and execute promotional strategies is required.
  • Ability to make sound independent judgments and utilize problem‑solving abilities are required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with various levels of internal and external contacts required.
  • Ability to learn quickly and retain new knowledge, be proactive in learning is required.
  • Superior time management skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in close collaboration and partnership with academic and administrative colleagues, students, alumni, Elders, residential school survivors, and community partners required.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to deal with high demand and/or stressful contacts.
  • Must have a strong work ethic and be willing to take the initiative to solve problems and learn new tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate sensitive issues with integrity, professionalism, discretion and tact is required.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem suite of tools including but not limited to Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Teams and the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technology systems and tools is required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
