The Program:

PChAD provides a confined court-ordered and monitored service to youth abusing or addicted to drugs and alcohol. PChAD is a partnership program with Recovery Alberta (formerly Alberta Health Services) working in a 10 to 15 day, secure, medically supported detox setting.

The Position:

We are looking for a temporary full time Child and Youth Care Counsellor for a one year contract. The schedule for the position is Monday to Friday with 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. shifts, rotating on a weekly basis.

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Child and Youth Care Counsellor is a member of the interdisciplinary team which assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the treatment program(s) for a given person served. The Counsellor participates fully in all facets of program life with the persons served (instrumental, clinical, developmental), and is responsible for their daily care, treatment, nurturance, supervision, health and discipline. The role is extensive and includes counselling, teaching and training, as well as recording and reporting.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with children and youth under 18 yrs. old, experiencing physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms from the effects of substances.
  • Monitor and work directly with the person served in all aspects of their life within a therapeutic milieu.
  • Participating in structured recreational and therapeutic group activities related to drug use and healthy living.
  • Supervise, organize and implement daily living activities and see these as opportunities for education and therapeutic intervention.
  • Engage persons served in individual and group activities of a recreational and treatment focused nature.
  • In dealing with persons served, parents/guardians, co-workers, other professionals and the public, demonstrate appropriate conduct in terms of behaviour, appearance, and presentation, and conform to Agency and partnership expectations with regard to confidentiality.
  • Attend to team membership responsibilities in terms of participation, communication, and positive attitude
  • Effective written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrates initiative, self-starter
  • Model socially acceptable values, i.e., integrity, fairness, respect, self-care, accountability

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Degree or Diploma in Human Services or Social Sciences
  • Experience in Therapeutic Campus-Based Care treatment (preferred)
  • Excellent engagement, behavior management, assessment and counseling experience with high-risk youth and their families
  • Strong understanding of substance use and mental health and its impact on youth and families; knowledge of community resources
  • Ability to learn relevant theories, skills, and practices as required for providing interventions for persons accessing the program
  • A high level of personal maturity and responsibility, and the ability to relate and work effectively with co-workers as a member of the treatment team
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Cross cultural competence; knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the recommendations, goals and activities of the commission.
  • A clear police check, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is required (or is in process of being completed) prior to employment
  • Clear Child Intervention Record Check
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and ability to drive Agency vehicles is preferred (min. 3 years driving experience with a class 5/GDL class 5 license).
  • Completion of ASIST, First Aid, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and Certification with CYCAA would be considered an asset
