About the organization

With its head office in Yellowknife, NT, the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) is an arm’s length government agency responsible for administering the Workers’ Compensation Acts , Safety Acts , Explosives Use Acts and the Mine Health and Safety Acts of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

The WSCC provides services to almost 40,000 workers and 4,000 employers across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, processes over 3,000 claims annually, and conducts over 1,000 inspections annually to ensure the safety of northern workplaces.

The WSCC is unique in Canada as it is the only workers’ compensation organization in the country to insure workers across more than one province or territory.

Yellowknife is the capital city (since 1967) of Northwest Territories, northwestern Canada. It lies on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, 5miles (8 km) south of the mouth of the Yellowknife River.

It was founded in 1934 after the discovery of gold; therefore, the Dene named the community Yellowknife or Sǫǫ̀mbak’è , which translates to Where the money is .

About the Opportunity

WCSS is seeking an Internal Auditor to join their Legal and Compliance Division in their Yellowknife office. The Internal Auditor is an integral part of the organization’s accountability process and will report to the Manager, Audit.

The Internal Auditor provides Senior Management and the Governance Council with an impartial, systematic appraisal of the Commission’s operations.

This role entails auditing for efficiency, economics and other aspects of operational effectiveness by looking at internal policies, practices, governance, risk management and process controls.

The Internal Auditor provides assurances that operations are functioning efficiently and effectively, in compliance with relevant authorities and directives, and in accordance with relevant strategic, operational, financial and compliance objectives, and advises on necessary improvements.

The Internal Auditor prepares regular reports on the audit assignments and contributes to the Quarterly and Annual reports.

Remote travel will be required, on average, two-three times a year to WSCC’s Iqaluit office or other locations.

The audits managed by the Internal Auditor are classified into two categories :

Scheduled Audits : Independent reviews of the operations to ensure the integrity of information, compliance with the policies and procedures, risk assessment, efficiency, and effectiveness of operations.

Unscheduled Audits : Special projects and investigations / inquiries are intended to address urgent issues for the President, Senior Management and the Audit Committee, through the Manager, Audit.

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree in business, finance, accounting, or other related disciplines.
  • Alternative combinations of post-secondary education and experience will be considered.
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation or an accounting designation (CPA) with three (3) years of progressive internal audit experience is desirable.
  • In-depth working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS).
  • Experience and knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) would be an asset.
  • Experience and competency in conducting different types of audits such as program, fraud-related, compliance, operational, IT and finance audits.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to provide constructive advice and recommendations in a professional non-accusatory manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, analyze, and synthesize multiple concepts and priorities.
  • Experience in developing and managing multi-year audit plan(s).
  • Ability to work with a wide range of computer applications, including word processing and spreadsheet applications (MS Office suite).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff at all levels in the organization.
  • Intuitive and analytical to help determine the nature and extent of anomalies.

Compensation

Base salary will be between $104,910 to $125,307 in proportion to skills and experience. This full-time permanent position comes with a comprehensive benefits package.

Further details will be discussed in a personal interview. Residents of Yellowknife and Northwest Territories receive an annual northern living allowance.
