Shape the Future of Veterinary Excellence in Western Canada

Are you a visionary veterinary leader ready to make a lasting impact? As the Regional Medical Director (Alberta) for VetCare, you’ll be based in Calgary and will play a pivotal role in driving exceptional medical quality across a group of practices throughout Western Canada. Partnering closely with the National Medical Director and the Operations leadership team, you’ll play a key role in elevating care in our practices while supporting VetCare’s ambition to be Canada’s leading provider of high-quality veterinary care.

This is a unique, full-time opportunity to harness your medical expertise, operational savvy, and financial insight–all while supporting passionate teams dedicated to outstanding patient and client care.

Your Impact: Key Responsibilities

  • Champion High Standard of Care: Educate and influence veterinary teams to embrace current medical thinking and deliver outstanding patient care
  • Build Strong Relationships: Collaborate with Regional Operations Managers, Practice Managers, and veterinary teams to foster continuity, teamwork, and excellence
  • Coach and Mentor: Spend time in each clinic, observing, coaching, and mentoring veterinarians both individually and in groups
  • Provide Hands-On Care: Work three days per week as a practicing veterinarian, supporting clinics and patients directly
  • Drive Continuous Improvement: Use reports, medical records, and on-site observation to enhance diagnostic, treatment, surgical, and dental skills across the region
  • Enhance Team Efficiency: Work with Practice Managers, Veterinarians, and Associates to improve time management and the effective use of technicians/technologists and technology
  • Attract Top Talent: Partner with Talent Acquisition to identify and assess DVM candidates and represent VetCare at industry and campus events
  • Foster Engagement: Organize and lead regional meetings, support DVM development plans, and define medical goals alongside Regional Operations Managers
  • Strengthen Clinic Culture: Conduct regular doctor and team meetings to build a positive, supportive clinic environment, while introducing/encouraging a collaborative environment between DVMs and support teams
  • Support New Graduates: Develop and oversee mentorship plans for new veterinarians, ensuring their successful integration and growth
  • Optimize Equipment: Evaluate and maximize the use of medical equipment to improve clinic efficiency and patient outcomes.
  • Manage Complaints: Address veterinary board and client complaints with professionalism, collaborating with the National Medical Director and the practice leadership teams to reach resolutions
  • Support Well-Being: Connect with and support Managing DVMs and associate veterinarians to ensure job satisfaction and overall well-being
  • Shape the Future: Act as a thought partner with the National Medical Director, contributing to the development and implementation of new protocols and guidelines

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent from an accredited university
  • Preferred: Experience in clinical leadership and clinic management, ideally within a multi-location environment
  • Licensed (or eligible for licensure) to practice veterinary medicine in the province of Alberta
  • Minimum 5 years of practical clinical experience in small animal medicine with strong clinical skills in medicine, surgery and dentistry
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills to foster collaboration with veterinary teams
  • Ability to promote and implement medical programs in a collaborative environment
  • Proficiency in using data-driven insights to identify opportunities and drive targeted improvements in patient outcomes and team effectiveness

Special Working Conditions

  • Flexible schedule and availability required
  • Must be based in Calgary as the majority of clinics are within easy driving distance. Occasional travel within the region and to other locations will be required for clinic support, meetings and conferences.

If you’re ready to lead, inspire, and elevate veterinary care across Western Canada, we invite you to join VetCare as our next Regional Medical Director (Alberta).

Apply today and help shape the future of veterinary medicine!
