Applications are now being accepted for an Engineering Associate in the Engineering Development Program with the Engineering Department in the Development Services Commission. The Engineering Associate position is focused on onboarding a new graduate looking to develop qualifying practical experience to attain the Professional Engineer designation. The role will participate in agreed‑upon rotations in various parts of the Engineering, Environmental Services and Operations Department, with responsibilities, tasks and projects designed to progressively fulfil the acceptable engineering experience to attain the Professional Engineer (PEng) designation. The Associate will participate and lead a variety of assignments related to the design, construction, traffic management, development, environmental, operation and maintenance of the City of Markham Assets.
Responsibilities
Infrastructure and Capital Projects (Engineering and Environmental Services)
- Undertake procurement process for design and construction projects through Request for Proposals and Request for Tenders.
- Assist in managing the timely delivery of design and construction of Capital Projects, including the management of external consultants and contractors.
- Provide engineering and technical review on the engineering submissions to consultants and contractors.
- Perform site visits as necessary to oversee active construction projects or during design for the purpose of field investigations.
Transportation Planning
Assist in coordinating and overseeing comprehensive traffic operations, road safety initiatives, programs, reviewing secondary plans, and Environmental Assessments within the City’s transportation network.Assist in managing consultants and contractors through all stages of transportation contracts including quality control, cost control, scheduling, design changes and approvals in coordination with external and internal authorities, codes and standards.Assist in City Wide Transportation Studies, secondary plans review, environmental assessment.Conduct best practice research to study industry trends, and emerging technologies in transportation engineering and planning.Development Engineering
Under the guidance of Development Engineers, execute various tasks related to draft plans, technical submissions, site plans, and official plan amendments, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.Conduct meticulous reviews of design drawings, sanitary sewer / storm sewer / water main calculations, hydrology, hydraulic calculations, and relevant regulations, policies, and guidelines.Address inquiries from residents, consultants, and stakeholders, attend meetings, and assist with planning approval processes.Provide support in the preparation of conditions for planning approval, review grading and servicing drawings, and facilitate tendering of servicing construction.Operations
Administer contracts for Operations & Maintenance and Lifecycle replacement projects for Roads and ROW infrastructure, ensuring adherence to project timelines and budgetary constraints.Conduct site inspections for Road projects, reviewing construction drawings for Utility Permits, and assisting in Roads and Utility permit review processes.Address inquiries related to residents and business owners, utilizing strong communication and customer service skills.Provide technical review of Development and Capital projects to ensure operational efficiency and compliance with regulatory standards.Qualifications
Minimum of four‑year bachelor’s civil engineering degree with knowledge in geotechnical, traffic management, transportation, structural, construction and / or materials specialties to qualify for the technical / educational requirements for professional licensing with Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).You must have graduated, or will graduate, (undergraduate or post‑graduate) between May 2024 and Spring 2026.Excellent project management and organizational skills.Effective decision‑making, conflict resolution and problem‑solving skills with a results‑oriented approach and strong customer service orientation.Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills to interact and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.Ability to work effectively as a team member and work collaboratively with others.Proficient computer skills to use a variety of software packages (e.g. MS Office : Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and to learn / utilize financial system.Submission and maintenance of valid Ontario Driver's License – Class ‘G’.
