Shape the Future of K–12 Education in Alberta!

Are you passionate about curriculum development and educational excellence? Join Alberta Education as a Curriculum Consultant, Wellness , where you’ll lead complex curriculum and policy projects and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to shape high-quality K–12 learning experiences.

About the Role

In this role, you will collaborate with educators, health partners, cultural communities, and education stakeholders across the province to create research informed curriculum and policy that reflects Alberta’s diverse learners—including Francophone and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit perspectives. Your work will support high-quality curriculum design, smooth implementation, and continuous improvement to ensure students are prepared for lifelong wellbeing and success.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Development & Expertise

  • Lead development and enhancement of Physical Education and Wellness curriculum, emphasizing mental health, physical literacy, healthy decision-making, and holistic wellbeing.
  • Provide expert guidance for curriculum implementation and monitor its continued use.
  • Review, synthesize, and summarize research from academic, government, and jurisdictional sources to support curriculum development.
  • Offer research informed advice on curriculum content, sequencing, and transitions across grade levels.
  • Support the creation of new curriculum and alignment between grades and from K–12 into post secondary and workplace pathways.

Stakeholder & Community Engagement

  • Collaborate with internal and external partners, including community and cultural leaders, to inform curriculum and policy decisions.
  • Build capacity among educators and partners to support strong implementation.
  • Ensure authentic inclusion of Francophone and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit perspectives.
  • Maintain strong communication channels and relationships to ensure timely issue identification and information flow.
  • Branch Operations & Leadership

  • Lead or support team operations, including managing assigned human and financial resources (e.g., contracts, grants).
  • Contribute to decision-making related to curriculum content, development processes, planning, and research.
  • Provide recommendations on emerging issues, risks, and opportunities.
  • Prepare analyses, briefing notes, business cases, and project plans to support senior leadership.
  • Support the design and delivery of professional learning to support consistent application of The Guiding Framework.
  • Information Requests & Research

  • Research and analyze complex inquiries regarding curriculum and wellness learning.
  • Identify key issues and recommendations to inform departmental responses.
  • Prepare briefing materials, supporting documents, and correspondence.
  • Ongoing Curriculum Improvement

  • Monitor student learning outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Anticipate future needs and trends in Physical Education and Wellness to guide ongoing curriculum renewal.
  • Qualifications

    Master's Degree in Education or a related field plus five years related experience or equivalent as described below.

    Equivalency : Bachelor's Degree in a related field plus seven years of related experience.

    The position requires the following knowledge, skills and abilities :

  • Research informed K–12 curriculum design and implementation in Physical Education and Wellness.
  • Current research in curriculum, assessment, and education technology, and the ability to apply evidence to practice.
  • Organizational culture and leadership theory to support cross functional work and change management.
  • Departmental policies, goals, and provincial accountability related to curriculum development.
  • School authority structures, accountability systems, and data informed improvement.
  • Policy and governance frameworks for full cycle curriculum development.
  • School-based wellness and mental health promotion using trauma informed, prevention focused, and culturally responsive approaches.
  • Collaboration with health-sector partners (AHS, community agencies) to align curriculum with evidence based youth mental health practices.
  • Assets

  • Alberta teaching certificate with extensive leadership experience or regulated health professional registration with child / youth mental health and demonstrated impact in school, community, or public-health settings.
  • Certificate or advanced mental health training (e.g., trauma informed practice, suicide prevention, addictions, CBT / DBT approaches) and experience with tiered interventions.
  • Experience partnering with AHS and community health agencies to translate clinical guidance into curriculum supports.
  • Strong knowledge of Physical Education and Wellness across K–12, integrating mental health literacy, health promotion, and physical literacy.
  • Understanding of 21st century learning research and curriculum implications.
  • Excellent research, communication, interpersonal, project management, and organizational skills.
  • Initiative, agility, and strong problem solving abilities.
  • French / English fluency (asset).
  • Understanding of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures (asset).
  • Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.

    This is a temporary full-time position working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

    This position is located in Edmonton.
