As part of the Materials Engineering Team in Dartmouth, NS, you will be responsible for driving forward our ambitious plans to enhance our service offering in the province through your work with a close-knit team of engineering specialists, professionals, and technical staff.

You will be responsible for conducting various tests and analyses to characterize and evaluate the properties of pavement structures, materials, and subgrade soils for our major clients.

What you can expect to do here :

  • This position will require working on multiple projects simultaneously and requires strong scheduling and organizational skills.
  • Obtain underground service clearances and prepare / deliver WSP's Ground Disturbance Authorization process.
  • Driving to various highway project sites to conduct and log core sampling, supervise and log boreholes, hauling and backing up test trailers, and completing Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) of highway pavements.
  • Potential for involvement in research and development of novel methods for assessing the quality of pavement materials and structures, and in the inspection, sampling, NDE and assessment of reinforced concrete structures.
  • You will perform a range of field and / or laboratory tests and procedures to assess the thickness, properties and behaviour of pavement structures, materials, and subgrade soils (hot mix asphalt, concrete, granular base / subbase, and subgrade).
  • You will operate and help maintain testing equipment and instruments such as the falling weight deflectometer, ground penetrating radar, laser inertial profilograph, and core sampling equipment, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
  • You will support equipment calibration, maintenance, and general housekeeping requirements to maintain a safe working environment.
  • You will support sample management and the safe materials handling practices required for shipping, receiving, logging, handling, storage, and disposal of samples.
  • You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including researchers, engineers, and scientists, to support ongoing projects and provide valuable insights.
  • You will compile and analyze experimental data for a variety of test methods, generating clear and concise reports to communicate findings to the team.
  • You will manage testing schedules, project effort, and expenses to support project management and accurate, timely invoicing for our clients.
  • Follow WSP's Project Review, Ethics and Safety Policies.

What you'll bring to WSP :

  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills, enabling effective collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience operating and analyzing falling weight deflectometer, ground penetrating radar, laser inertial profilograph, and coring equipment, and experience supervising and logging boreholes and classifying subgrade soils.
  • Demonstrated experience in safe driving of vehicle and trailer, with a clean driver's abstract.
  • Adaptability and a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Proficiency in using field and / or laboratory equipment and software for data analysis.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with a focus on accuracy and precision in all tasks.
  • You enjoy a combination of both fieldwork and office-based work. You aren't afraid to get your hands dirty and pitch in for any task when needed!
  • Good written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Punctuality, reliability, and the ability to work effectively in teams and on your own.
  • A willingness to do a variety of tasks and the ability to prioritize work according to importance and deadlines.
  • Light to moderate lifting will be required.
  • Sound understanding of the need for health and safety procedures in the workplace / possess a safety conscious attitude.
