Job Description

Job DescriptionWhat Vista Does

Vista Projects is an integrated engineering firm who has been solving complex challenges in the energy industry since 1985. We are innovators at our core. We continually find better, smarter ways to design and deliver oil and gas projects, and we are proud to be contributing on some of the most exciting low-carbon and synthetic fuel developments in the North America. For our people, that means meaningful, varied work and a real chance to shape how modern engineering gets done.

We are innovators in the energy industry. We actively find ways to improve how oil and gas projects are designed and delivered, and we are contributing to some remarkable low-carbon and synthetic fuel developments; including electro sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) and gas-to-liquids (GTL) projects. We are headquartered in Calgary and maintain a satellite office in Houston.

Why We Do It

The world needs energy, and better engineering makes the projects that deliver it safer, more efficient and more sustainable. Our multi-discipline teams have designed some of the most challenging and successful projects in the North American energy sector, from early-stage studies and pilots to large-scale commercial expansions. We take pride in doing that work well, and just as much pride in continuously improving how we do it.

What You Would Do in This Role

We are seeking an Intermediate Piping Engineer to support the design and execution of piping systems on EPC projects and MOC programs within oil sands, SAGD, and energy facilities. This role focuses on technical execution, interdisciplinary coordination, and engineering support from concept through detailed design and construction.
The successful candidate will work under the guidance of Senior and Lead Piping Engineers to deliver safe, code-compliant, and constructible piping designs that meet project quality, cost, and schedule objectives.

  • Support piping engineering activities on projects from concept through detailed engineering and construction support
  • Develop, review, and update piping deliverables under senior supervision including:
    • Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
    • Line Designation Tables (LDT)
    • Piping specifications and line classes
    • Valve lists, specifications, and data sheets
    • Piping isometric drawings and general arrangement drawings
    • Material take-offs and material requisitions (MR)
    • Specialty item data sheets and lists
    • Tie-in lists
  • Perform maximum allowable flange rating, pipe wall thickness, and hydrotest calculations
  • Assist with material selection for various services, including:
    • Steam distribution and gathering systems
    • Emulsion, produced water, and diluent systems
    • Blowdown, relief, and flare piping
    • Sweet and our service
    • High pressure and elevated temperature service
    • Fuel gas, produced gas, and utility piping
  • Prepare engineering work packages
  • Check piping isometric materials
  • Apply sound engineering judgment related to corrosion, erosion, and operating conditions common to SAGD and gas facilities
  • Review vendor data and support technical bid evaluations
  • Provide input for development and maintaining Piping Engineering procedures and standards
  • Assist with ABSA registration packages and regulatory submissions as required
  • Authenticate documentation with a professional engineering stamp as required
  • Comply with budget, schedule and change management requirements
  • Strictly follow QA/QC procedures
  • Update project schedule on a weekly basis.
  • Prepare progress reports as directed
Interdisciplinary Coordination
  • Coordinate piping design activities with:
    • Process
    • Mechanical
    • Piping Stress
    • Civil / Structural
    • Electrical and Instrumentation
  • Participate in model reviews, constructability reviews, and design coordination meetings
  • Address design comments and support resolution of interdisciplinary issues
Project & Field Support
  • Support HAZOPs, model reviews, and constructability sessions
  • Provide engineering support during fabrication, installation, commissioning, and start-up
  • Assist with brownfield tie-ins and work within operating facility constraints
  • Respond to technical queries, field change requests, and engineering clarifications
Standards, Codes & Compliance
  • Ensure piping designs comply with applicable codes and standards, including:
    • ASME B31.3
    • CSA Z662 (as applicable)
    • Applicable API codes, ASME Section VIII, and client specifications
  • Follow applicable regulatory guidelines (ABSA and provincial authorities)
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) eligible for registration with APEGA
  • Five to Ten years of piping engineering experience, preferably within oil sands, SAGD, or gas processing facilities

  • Strong communication and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced multidiscipline team environment
Preferred
  • Experience with oil sands, SAGD, and/or gas plant facilities
