Occupational Therapist – Royal Columbian Hospital

Salary: CAD $42.56 - $52.95 / hour

Join our dynamic team at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC, where you’ll play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for our patients. Royal Columbian Hospital is located adjacent to the Sapperton SkyTrain station on the Expo Line, making it easily accessible by public transit for patients and staff. The Royal Columbian Hospital Redevelopment Project (RCHRP) is a multi-year, multi-phase project to increase the hospital\'s capacity, beds and services. When the full redevelopment is complete, the people of British Columbia will have increased access to cardiac, trauma, mental health, maternity and NICU services and beds.

New Westminster is known for its waterfront views along the Fraser River and is part of the Greater Vancouver region.

Detailed Overview

Provides occupational therapy services in accordance with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC standards of practice, Fraser Health mission, values and occupational therapy standards, and in collaboration with the interprofessional care team to provide patient- and family-centered care. Includes assessment, diagnosis and prognosis, treatment planning, intervention development, implementation and evaluation, and patient education to enable optimal health outcomes. Participates in approved research, special projects, and program quality and safety activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provides occupational therapy assessment of physical and cognitive status, functional abilities, needs and goals; conducts reviews of records, interviews patients, collaborates with the health care team, and performs hands-on examinations.
  • Develops diagnosis and prognosis, creates evidence-based, outcome-focused intervention plans, and sets short- and long-term goals in collaboration with patients and caregivers.
  • Implements interventions according to treatment guidelines and educates patients and caregivers on self-management and injury prevention.
  • Participates in interprofessional care planning and updates care plans accordingly.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of interventions and adjusts plans to achieve optimal functional independence.
  • Identifies referrals for occupational therapy services and facilitates referrals to appropriate programs.
  • Collaborates with patients and families in care planning, maintains therapeutic relationships, and safeguards patient privacy and autonomy.
  • Maintains patient records, documents progress, and contributes to reports as required.
  • Delegates tasks to rehabilitation assistants and provides guidance and supervision as needed.
  • Acts as a resource to other professionals and participates in team activities to promote evidence-based practice and safety.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Current full registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of occupational therapy theory and practice within a patient- and family-centered model of care.
  • Knowledge of CHCP BC standards of practice and guidelines for clinical practitioners.
  • Knowledge of standardized tests and measures, equipment and related techniques.
  • Broad knowledge of other health care professions and their roles in patient care.
  • Effective communication with patients, caregivers, team members, and in writing.
  • Ability to teach and provide effective consultation to patients and colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively; priority setting and adaptability to unexpected events.
  • Basic knowledge of research processes and methodology.
  • Ability to operate related equipment and software; physical ability to perform duties.
