Detailed Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, and working collaboratively with the interprofessional care team, the Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse provides and coordinates nursing care services to clients experiencing problematic substance use. This includes assessment, referrals, counselling, client and family teaching and follow-up as required, and health promotion activities. Demonstrates nursing expertise and provides clinical leadership in evidence-based practice through direct care activities including nursing assessments, crisis intervention, treatment and group facilitation.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and provides direct nursing care to clients in compliance with standards of practice by performing activities such as reviewing client/family history, conducting physical/psychosocial assessments, developing a care plan tailored to the client, and collaborating with the health care team.
  • Processes physician or nurse practitioner orders, administers medications, carries out treatments, and monitors and documents effects.
  • Manages emergencies including drug overdose, heart attack, assaultive behaviour and seizures, initiating CPR and/or alerting ambulance and/or police as required.
  • Consults and collaborates with interdisciplinary team members and other health care professionals in identifying and resolving client/family issues through participation in conferences, rounds and meetings.
  • May provide general and crisis counselling to clients in the Emergency Department, IPU, and medical wards, including short-term follow-up per approved treatment plans; educates clients and families about illness prevention, health maintenance and promotion.
  • Identifies when client needs exceed RN/RPN scope of practice and communicates this to the interprofessional team.
  • Participates in quality improvement and risk management activities, safety audits, and updates to nursing practices and protocols as needed.
  • Acts as a clinical resource to clients, families, and other health care professionals; participates in the training and orientation of nursing staff and students through mentoring and role modelling.
  • Maintains clinical records and documentation to ensure current and complete client/family records.
  • Performs intake, mental health assessments, and develops and adjusts comprehensive treatment plans; administers medications and monitors response to treatment to support client-centered care.
  • Maintains a safe environment and reports risks to relevant coordinators; participates in program development and evaluation of client services.
  • Identifies personal learning needs and engages in activities to meet professional goals.
  • Plans and delivers educational sessions to clients and families on topics such as detoxification, relapse prevention, stress management, and wellness; facilitates group sessions with appropriate therapeutic approaches in collaboration with the care team.
  • Performs outreach nursing care where applicable and supports clients in accessing program services; transports clients to appointments when required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience

Graduation from an approved Nursing Program with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the BCCNM. Completion of approved addictions or substance use training or a substance use certificate program, and one year of recent related experience in an addictions setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. May require: Standard First Aid, CPR level C, skills in facilitating psycho-educational groups, valid Class 5 Driver's License with access to a vehicle. May require eligibility for BC Provincial Opiate Addiction Treatment Support Program course and related preceptorship.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to complete mental health and substance use assessments and provide nursing care including crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of mental illness and substance use treatment; knowledge of psychopharmacology and counselling/group facilitation.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and policies; strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to promote person-centered care with empathy and cultural sensitivity; educate clients and families about health care topics.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work; collaborate with the interprofessional care team; use evidence-informed practice to support nursing decisions.
  • Ability to operate related equipment and computer applications; physical capability to perform duties.
