We currently have an exciting Part Time opportunity for a Supervisor, Dispensary/Parenteral Services to join our team at BC Children’s & Women’s Hospital located in Vancouver, BC. The successful candidate will have completed an Accredited Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program and have current registration as a Pharmacist with the College of Pharmacists of BC.

Detailed Overview

The Supervisor, Dispensary/Parenteral Services is responsible for the supervision of the dispensary, parenteral service area, ward stock and other designated areas on assigned evening/weekend shifts. Supervises designated staff; optimizes utilization of staff and other resources through monitoring of workload, workflow and performance efficiency. Ensures that staff orientation and training objectives are attained during assigned shifts and provides feedback on shift activities to the Coordinator, Distribution Pharmacy Services or designate. Provides input for new or revised dispensary/parenteral services related policies and procedures; participates in developing orientation programs for new staff, monitors quality assurance and performs workload measurement of tasks in assigned area; preceptors student pharmacists, pharmacy residents, pharmacy technicians and assistants and performs pharmacist functions as required.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises designated staff by coordinating work assignments, evaluating workload and workflow, and monitoring/optimizing staff performance and efficiency.
  • Ensures that staffing levels are adequate to handle anticipated workload, directs staff to other areas, calls in staff and authorizes overtime as required, and provides a written and/or verbal report to the Coordinator summarizing the shift activities and identifying any distribution issues.
  • Interprets and applies the provisions of the various collective agreements, in conjunction with Labour Relations, Human Resources and other Pharmacy supervisors.
  • Provides input and recommendations for new or revised dispensary/parenteral services policies and procedures.
  • Implements drug distribution safety quality programs and initiatives such as Smart Pumps.
  • Participates in developing orientation programs for new staff and provides orientation in dispensary, parenteral service area, ward stock and other designated areas; serves as a role model to other staff in the demonstration of performance objectives, work ethic and adherence to departmental policies.
  • Monitors quality assurance and performs workload measurement of tasks in assigned area to ensure consistency within the department.
  • Participates as an interdisciplinary team member by communicating with Pharmacy team members, physicians, nurses and other professionals, providing information regarding products and operational policies, investigating and responding to complaints and attending meetings to ensure coordinated efforts of all functions pertaining to the designated area.
  • Participates in pharmacy education programs by preceptoring student pharmacists, pharmacy residents, student pharmacy technicians and assistants in dispensary, parenteral service area, ward stock and other designated areas rotations.
  • Recommends budget adjustments as appropriate in conjunction with the Coordinator.
  • Performs pharmacist functions as required, including dispensing medications, providing pharmaceutical care and providing input to other members of the multidisciplinary team regarding patient care plans.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

Current registration as a Pharmacist with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia. Certification of completion of an accredited Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program supplemented by three (3) years recent, relevant hospital pharmacy experience, including experience in teaching or supervising staff or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills And Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Drug Distribution processes in a hospital or health care related setting.
  • Broad knowledge of organizational policies, procedures and standards of care.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based clinical pharmacy practice.
  • Knowledge of medication use evaluation.
  • Knowledge of research processes and methodology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health practitioners, as well as patients, family members and the public.
  • Ability to lead, plan, implement, problem solve and manage projects.
  • Ability to supervise, teach and motivate others.
  • Ability to apply quality management methodology to existing processes.
  • Ability to organize work and prioritize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
