Job description

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Academic Chair, and under the direct supervision of the Environmental Engineering Technology - Water Resources program faculty, you will provide laboratory, shop, field and administrative support for the departmental program portfolio. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Administrative

  • Maintain and track equipment inventory
  • Conduct weekly and monthly laboratory audits for safety and regulatory compliance
  • Procurement and purchasing of equipment, supplies, and laboratory consumables
  • Submit facilities work requests to address lab deficiencies

Laboratory

  • Operation and maintenance of the deionized water system supplying 5 laboratories
  • Calibration of analytical balances, spectrometers, as well as a variety of meters and probes
  • Assist students in laboratory activities
  • Conduct a yearly audit of the chemical inventory
  • Proper collection, handling, and disposal of hazardous waste
  • Sample preparation in advance of laboratory sessions
  • Provide ongoing hazard assessment during active labs
  • Collaboration on SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) development to standardize laboratory practices and procedures

Fieldwork

  • Obtain samples for laboratory analysis
  • Assist faculty in conducting fieldwork in remote areas
  • Assist faculty with Surveying using a level, total station, and GNSS
  • Repair and maintain survey equipment as required

Safety

  • Conduct hazard assessments and safety meetings for fieldwork
  • Develop and edit Safe Work Practices for laboratory activities and fieldwork
  • Knowledge of SDS, WHMIS, and 5S+S
  • Comfortable with the operation of laboratory safety systems

What you'll need

Qualifications

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is a relevant post-secondary diploma or certification in Environmental or Water Resources Engineering Technology and a relevant TechNova certified Technician or Technologist designation.

  • In addition, you possess training in WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety regulations as well as Standard First Aid, CPR and Marine discipline relevant safety training or you have a willingness to obtain within the first year.

  • You have a minimum of five (5) years (full-time equivalent) of recent and related occupational experience in Environmental or Water Resources Engineering Technology. Consideration may be given to candidates with a combination of related education and less experience.

  • Marine sector experience would be considered as asset.

  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite and e-mail.

  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology in advancing your work.

  • Experience in training/facilitation preparation, delivery and evaluation would be considered an asset.

  • Experience supporting/providing service to students and prospective students would be considered an asset.

  • Ability to maintain and coordinate shop budget for supplies and materials.

  • Ability to assist faculty with demonstrations. You demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence.

  • You are dedicated to life-long learning.

  • Ability to perform all physical duties of the job as required for the operation and maintenance of the assigned shops, labs, tools and shop/lab equipment.
