CURRICULUM INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER

ABOUT THE CLPNA

The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) is a non‑profit regulatory organization. The CLPNA exists to protect Alberta healthcare users. Our first responsibility is to the public. We regulate the profession of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), setting and maintaining standards to ensure the public receives safe, competent, and ethical healthcare services. Our focus and commitment to public protection and regulatory excellence underscores everything we do. The CLPNA has partnered with the Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services to lead the development and the continued operations of the Alberta Health Care Aide (HCA) Directory. In Alberta, HCAs are not a regulated profession, although HCAs will become regulated under the Health Professions Act in the future.

EMPLOYMENT TERM

This is a full‑time, permanent appointment. The position is eligible for hybrid work, with a requirement to work in our Edmonton office on a regular weekly basis.

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Director, Professional Development, the Curriculum Instructional Designer is responsible for developing and maintaining learning resources and evaluation tools that support the continuing competence and safe practice of LPNs and HCAs. The primary role of this position is to ensure that the learning resources align with strategic goals, the department's regulatory framework, and adult learning best practices, meeting the learning needs of LPNs and HCAs.

Collaborating with the Professional Development Department and internal collaborators, the Curriculum Instructional Designer applies adult learning methodologies, such as the ADDIE model, to craft high‑quality, engaging, and interactive learning resources that meet the unique needs of our registrants. This position requires a balance of creativity, attention to visual / accessibility standards, and design mastery.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Curriculum Development : Develop and maintain high‑quality learning resources for LPNs and HCAs. Design curriculum using sound pedagogical and adult learning principles, ensuring alignment with standards of practice, policies, and regulatory requirements. Evaluate content for clarity, engagement, and accuracy to provide engaging and comprehensive learning experiences while managing project plans, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Instructional Design : Conduct needs analyses to ensure course objectives support regulatory outcomes. Create scripts, storyboards, and interactive course materials using instructional design and adult learning principles. Apply evidence‑based methodologies to produce accessible, engaging, and innovative eLearning experiences using design software such as Articulate 360.
  • Implementation and Quality Assurance : Ensure the functionality and quality of eLearning resources through analysis and testing at various stages of course development. Communicate with team members to provide updates and address concerns. Review content to ensure compliance with regulation, legislation, and CLPNA policies and procedures.
  • Evaluation and Improvement : Monitor and assess existing learning resources to ensure relevance, effectiveness, and alignment with best practices. Use learner feedback and analytics to test, refine, and update course designs to meet diverse learning needs. Contribute to setting departmental performance measures and targets to support continuous improvement.
  • Mentorship : Share expertise in instructional design principles and techniques by mentoring others through the curriculum development and instructional design processes. Establish documentation to support the design process and workflows to promote best practices and contribute to cross training.

You are diligent in your review, present with effective time and project management skills, and can lead others in a fast‑paced environment. You are a strong leader, providing guidance, mentorship, and development to a group of professionals. You are self‑aware and apply your critical thinking skills to ensure processes align with the strategic vision and goals of the project. You conduct your work autonomously, collaborating and communicating with colleagues appropriately and effectively. You are knowledgeable about trends and issues that may impact HCAs, LPNs, and / or healthcare on a provincial and national level.
