Duties

Jurilinguists are highly qualified professionals who review the translation of decisions from the Courts we serve. They have a strong academic background, are very self-sufficient, and like to solve language problems.

As part of the jurilinguist team, you will review the translation of decisions or other texts and answer language questions.

In this evolving field, you will have the opportunity to use and evaluate state-of-the-art neural translation tools. You will be part of a growing team within our organization and will have the opportunity to expand your knowledge through contacts with experienced colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Review the translation of the judgments and reasons for judgment of the chief justices and the judges of the 4 Courts, including judgments from cases of national interest that attract public attention.
  • Review, from time to time, draft judgments and reasons for judgment written by judges, including in their second language.
  • Provide jurilinguistic and linguistic advice in both official languages to chief justices, judges, law clerks, senior executives, and contract editors and translators.
  • Answer questions related to the terminology to use in texts from the 4 Courts and help assess the linguistic quality of various texts in other situations.
  • Participate in the evaluation of external translation and editing services providers.
  • Train the new generation of jurilinguists by mentoring interns and new colleagues.

Intent of the process

A pool of pre-qualified or fully qualified candidates may be created to staff similar or identical positions with various tenure, various bilingual linguistic profiles and security requirements within the Courts Administration Service.

Candidates may be evaluated further, for specific opportunities, on qualifications (including conditions of employment and operational requirements) that are deemed necessary, whether or not these qualifications have been listed on the job advertisement.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in law or translation.

Extensive experience* and recent experience in legal revision or legal translation from French to English or extensive experience* and recent experience in legal revision or legal translation from English to French.

Extensive experience is defined as at least five (5) years of experience, with such activities representing at least 75% of everyday tasks.

Recent experience is defined as at least five (5) years of experience acquired within the last seven (7) years.

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

Bilingual - Imperative (CCB / CCB)

Knowledge of legal terminology and of jurilinguistics.

Knowledge of legal and language research tools and techniques.

Knowledge of the French language, for example, its grammar, syntax and style or knowledge of the English language, for example, its grammar, syntax and style.

Ability to revise French to English translations of legal texts (for a candidate who specializes in the English language) or ability to revise English to French translations of legal texts (for a candidate who specializes in the French language).

Ability to translate, from French to English, legal texts or other types of texts (for a candidate who specializes in the English language) or ability to translate, from English to French, legal texts or other types of texts (for a candidate who specializes in the French language).

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Ability to work under pressure while respecting set deadlines and managing priorities.

Experience translating and / or revising judgments rendered by courts or tribunals.

Experience working in a judicial or quasi-judicial environment.

Experience working with Logiterm.

Management may decide to use a cut-off mark that is higher than the pass mark on any evaluation used throughout the process.

If a qualified candidate has been selected and appointed on an indeterminate basis from the established pool, they will be removed from the pool.
