Senior Cloud Software Engineer in Test – Rivian & Volkswagen Group Technologies
Role Summary
Join our vehicle management service (VMS) integration Quality Assurance (QA) team, where you will assume a pivotal role in the testing and quality assurance of our Cloud, mobile application, and vehicle firmware. Utilizing automation, manual testing, or semi-automated methods, you will contribute to the verification of software against established standards and the validation of its functionality. The VMS Cloud Test Automation Engineer will design, implement, and scale automation for cloud-native services that power our VMS platform, partnering closely with developers, SRE, and product to ensure feature quality, service reliability, and fast delivery through robust test frameworks, reliable pipelines, and data-informed quality gates. In addition to testing, you are required to contribute to the development and enhancement of automated tools, internal tools, and infrastructure to support scalability. As a key team member, your responsibilities will extend beyond the validation of VMS, encompassing the initiation of improvements, the identification of issues, collaboration across teams, and the meticulous testing and verification of bug fixes until resolution. If you are passionate about QA, automation, the development of internal tools, and the delivery of high‑quality consumer solutions, we invite you to join us in shaping the future of automotive technology.
Responsibilities
- Designing and developing internal tools to test cloud and cloud services, and extending to vehicle firmware, mobile app, and web app (e.g., automation framework for web or mobile, API testing framework, JMeter for performance testing, vehicle simulator, software to control hardware or Raspberry Pi, RF (BLE, UWB), and IoT devices)
- Own the test automation strategy across service, integration, and end-to-end layers for VMS microservices and data flows.
- Build and maintain scalable automation frameworks for API, event‑driven, and contract testing that run locally and in CI / CD.
- Develop reliable, hermetic test environments using containers and infrastructure‑as‑code for reproducible results.
- Implement quality gates and test analytics within CI / CD to enforce release criteria and shorten feedback loops.
- Design non‑functional testing (performance, load, soak, resilience, and chaos) aligned to service SLOs and customer scenarios.
- Champion observability‑driven testing using logs, metrics, traces, and synthetic checks to detect regressions early.
- Lead data‑driven test design and synthetic data seeding for realistic, privacy‑safe scenarios.
- Define and automate service contracts and consumer‑driven contracts to protect integrations across services.
- Collaborate with engineers to make services more testable through fixtures, mocks, fakes, and feature flags.
- Create release validation playbooks and automate smoke and canary verifications for safe, incremental rollouts.
- Mentor peers on testing best practices, code reviews for testability, and continuous improvement of quality processes.
- Collaborate with product and development teams to create test strategies, plans, and test cases for app features, ensuring quality and performance of application to specifications.
- Identify potential problems and work with developers to resolve application bottlenecks, supporting failure analysis and root‑cause analysis for test and integration issues.
- Architect, build, and maintain electronic parts and equipment on test benches and test vehicles – RxT and RxS.
- Grow your skills with continual learning, workshops, conferences, and talks.
- Hands‑on physical interaction with the hardware and the Rivian vehicles in the office.
