Senior Database Administrator

Job Scope :

This position will be part of the Database Planning and Delivery project. The role will evaluate our current state, identify the appropriate path forward, and implement it.

Job Duties :

This role is responsible for building, maintaining, and performance-tuning production databases to deliver databases with appropriate levels of data availability and performance.

This role is also responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing database procedures and standards.

  • Provide technical expertise in database management systems to support systems development and operational activities.
  • Create and maintain the logical and physical structures of databases and related structures required by database applications.
  • Senior Database Administrator will monitor database applications, databases, and DBMS statistics and make the appropriate changes to improve performance.
  • Maintain database authorization requirements.
  • Maintain and enforce database security standards and procedures.
  • Evaluate application and user requirements and make appropriate database modifications.
  • Provide technical expertise to development teams, Application Maintenance Services, and business teams.
  • Perform troubleshooting activities for database problems, database software problems and database application problems.
  • Perform DBMS software installations, and plan and test upgrades.
  • Plan, test, and implement software patches and application updates or upgrades.
  • Disaster recovery preparation and testing.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation.
  • The Senior Database Administrator will develop and automate system-related procedures.
  • Perform problem diagnosis, troubleshooting, and resolution.
  • Monitor ongoing operations and perform ongoing system administration tasks : release new versions; database tuning; capacity planning;
  • historical archiving; database consistency and integrity checking; log file analysis; job scheduling; scripting; indexes;

reorganizations; change control; and server requirements analysis.

Plan, configure, and test database backup and test recovery to both on disk and tape.

The client will supply a laptop or desktop

Working Hours :

  • Standard Hours of work are : : Alberta time, Monday through Friday excluding holidays observed by the Province
  • Work must be done from within Alberta, due to network and data security issues.

Notes on Location :

There is a possibility the resource may be able to work remotely, though must be available for onsite meetings when required.

It is anticipated that there will be working days or more in the office per week.

  • Onsite meetings include but are not limited to strategic, architectural, and technical discussions, and meetings with team members, senior managers, directors, executive directors, and business clients.
  • In the event of an onsite meeting, the client does not pay for travel to attend on-site meetings, nor any expenses related to relocation, commuting, housing / accommodation, food / drink.

Education

Bachelor's degree or diploma in IT, Computer Science, Math, or Engineering or equivalent.

  • DBA experience within an environment of similar size and complexity of Government of... years
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server or higher. years

  • Prior experience with Oracle Internet Directory OID and Data Domain is desirable. years
  • Prior experience with RMAN for point-in-time recovery. years
  • Prior utilization of Oracle Enterprise Manager OEM with Oracles Diagnostic and Tuning. years
