Faculty Position and University Research Chair in Law, Technology and Innovation

The Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor to commence July 1, 2024.

The successful applicant will be nominated for a University Research Chair (URC) in Law, Technology, and Innovation . The applicant must be an exceptional researcher who leads a recognized or very promising interdisciplinary research program focused on legal issues arising at the intersection of law, technology, entrepreneurship, innovation, and policy, and could include the role of law in addressing the accelerating changes in technology that impact our culture, the economy, the world of work and business, the environment, or other domains, as well as social inequities that arise from these changes.

The goal of this chair is to increase innovation, intensity, and impact of research in the field of technology law, while developing wide-ranging interdisciplinary partnerships with researchers, policymakers, and a broad range of interested parties.

The successful applicant will hold a permanent regular position in the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law in the English Common Law Program or in the French Common Law Program, where they will be expected to establish a strong, externally funded, collaborative and interdisciplinary research program that will support the in the areas of Shaping the Digital World and Advancing Just Societies, and contribute to the advancement of equity, diversity and inclusion in research, as well as in the supervision and research training of graduate students (,

Located on the unceded ancestral lands of the Omamiwiiniwug Algonquin nation, the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa boasts 75 full-time faculty members in its and 35 in its , which combined with its six research centres, 15 chairs, and three laboratories, fosters an exceptional intellectual environment for study (or learning), research and teaching.

The University Research Chairs (URC) , tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional researchers or acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field.

  • URC nominations are adjudicated on the level of research excellence of the nominee, and the quality and originality of the proposed research program;
  • the potential to achieve international recognition in the field, to attract and retain excellent students and trainees, to create a more equitable, diversified, and inclusive research environment;

and on the relevance of the research program to the . Each URC receives a $25,000 annual research stipend from the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation.

Up to $5,000 of the stipend may be used as a salary supplement to the nominee. The University recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (, parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement and that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process of the URC adjudication.

Skills requirements :

Education : or in Law is preferred (or equivalent).

Required Qualifications : superior research achievements in the URC’s identified area(s) and proof of interdisciplinary collaborations, a solid record with respect to teaching and training of students at the graduate level, the ability to obtain external research funds, and excellent communication skills in either English or French.

Passive knowledge of the other official language in Canada is a requirement for tenure. English-French bilingualism is an asset.
