The Manager, Government Grants ( Manager ) will manage all assigned Grants engagements and may be asked to assist the Principal and the Ryan business development team sell the Grants services from time to time.

The Manager, Government Grants ( Manager ) will work directly with clients / companies, business executives and managers, and government program officers to draft government funding applications.

They will develop government grant applications for clients and ensure any applicable client reporting to funding authorities is properly executed.

In addition, the Manager will perform research on government grants, monitor and provide updates on existing programs and profile new programs across the practice.

The position will demand attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in constantly changing environments. Additionally, the position demands strong writing, critical thinking, decision-making, strong stakeholder management, and analysis skills as well as an ability to comprehend and synthesize complex concepts.

The position involves significant project management to lead and write business proposals and funding applications that range from $5,000 to $300,000,000 in size.

These funding applications are positioned to assist our clients’ businesses with projects including business expansion, research & development, marketing, capital investment, and hiring initiatives.

Additionally, the Manager may support team members with the crafting and writing of large, complex, and technical proposals as well as the sales team in project scoping and project vetting.

Duties and responsibilities, as they align to Ryan’s Key Results

People :

  • Create a positive team member experience.
  • Along with the practice Principal, and the Director, Grants, meet and develop relationships with all key grants Ministry, departments and institutions on an on-going basis.

Funding Strategizing, Project Scoping, Stakeholder and Team Management, and Team Communication (35%) : The Manager will be responsible for communicating program requirements to C-suite level executives and develop a strong understanding of our clients’ projects and areas of investment.

They will then gather / synthesize project information, managing proposal writing, and oversee the application process through to submission.

Client Relationship Management : This is a client facing role and the Manager will be required to manage client demands and expectations effectively.

They will develop strong working relationships with clients to ensure project completion and be able to communicate the Firm’s value proposition effectively to clients.

  • Stakeholder Management : Develop and cultivate relationships with program contacts and decision makers to inform positioning and insight into program requirements, guidelines, and processes.
  • Team Management : Oversee and support a team of direct reports as applicable. Support onboarding of new hires and ongoing development of existing team members.

Support professional development plans, deliver training, and provide feedback to management. Maximize employees’ potential and help them amplify their contributions to support organizational success.

Documentation Development : Development of a range of training documents as needed for the company. This can include style guides, formatting guides, quick reference materials, process guidelines, and other writing documents.

The goal is to develop a more formal library of reference material to support on-boarding and on-going training.

Organization Alignment : Improve organizational effectiveness as guided by organization culture, values, strategy, and processes through aligning human behaviour.

Assess where positive change is required and develop a plan for effecting required change.

  • Strategic Planning : Liaise with the Director Team to ensure practice alignment with strategic and organizational goals of the practice and the firm.
  • Team Meetings : Regular and ongoing meetings with Directors, Senior Managers, Senior Consultants, Consultants, BDs, and practice Principal(s) to review projects, strategy, and deliverables.

Proposal Preparation, Writing and Submission of Business Cases and Funding Proposals (50%) : Either on their own or with a Manager, work on the preparation and submission of funding proposals.

This includes synthesizing project information gathered from research, client meetings, notes from the sales team or Manager, and previous funding proposals.

A Manager will review work and provide feedback for changes or improvement before submitting. Tasks include :

  • Information Gathering and Analysis : Direct client engagement, company and project information gathering, project scoping and strategizing, and communicating program and project details with client and the government program staff.
  • Research and Analysis : Research through a variety of online sources, market reports, client data, and interview notes to develop a coherent narrative for a funding proposal.
  • Application Preparation / Writing : Applications include varying combinations of a project and / or business focus depending on the nature of the request for funding.

They will work with our team to write drafts and / or review business plans and / or formal application files.

Submission, Due Diligence, and Compliance : Directly submit and follow-up with government funding body, monitor application status, and provide follow-up support to client.

When applicable, they will support clients through the claims / compliance process.

  • Monthly / quarterly Targets : Workload management to ensure the team’s monthly and quarterly targets are regularly met, as well as troubleshoot any challenges that arise.
  • Project Management : Balance writing and project lead workload. This role involves leading and writing multiple, concurrent projects and ensuring the final product meets internal and client standards.

Progress Monitoring (15%)

  • Progress Monitoring : Review and monitor KPIs and firm targets. Analyze raw data from CRM and provide feedback to Directors and Principal(s) on status and progress to target.
  • Risk Management : Additionally, the Manager will also strategically highlight risk management issues and identify how New Programs could be positioned optimally for enhanced performance of our business and customer care.

Propose effective changes to match business requirements, optimizing team performance.

  • Administrative duties : CRM recordkeeping / forecasting and reporting to senior management.
  • Other : Special projects, high priority items including, working with Senior Managers, Senior Consultants, and Consultants to ensure Salesforce / CRM is up to date weekly and monthly for forecasting purposes.

Education and Experience :

A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business / Administration, Accounting, Finance, English or Journalism is required. Prior experience in Grants, as well as broad business experience and business plan writing would be strong assets.

Qualifications Preferred :

  • Experience reporting to, or working with, business leaders
  • Experience managing others
  • Experience preparing or evaluating business and marketing plans or case studies / projects
  • Understanding of accounting and finance practices; familiarity with financial statements and metrics
  • Industry experience in roles that include strategic planning, project management, or similar.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or advanced technology sector
