The District is seeking candidates for a Director, Counseling, position to support assigned schools / area and other programs.

BASIC FUNCTION :

  • The Director, Counseling , will plan, organize, manage, and direct the daily operations to support schools, staff, students, and families within assigned counseling programs and services;
  • design and implement communications and programs that are effective in providing timely communication, support, and resources across the District;

ensure compliance with state and federal mandates, District policy, and uphold fiscal responsibility; conduct research, analyze data, and prepare statistical reports to support and implement best practices.

POSITION SPECIFICS :

  • Working Location is based out of Thriving School Communities - Student Services Department - 4100 Normal Street, San Diego, CA 92103
  • Scheduled for 12 months / 248 days per year
  • This position is anticipated to be filled for the start of the 2024-2025 school year, pending Board of Education approval.

The Director, Counseling, will be paid on the AASD Certificated Supervisors Salary Schedule Salary Grade 032.

E Essential Functions

Direct, lead, and supervise assigned staff to continually improve and calibrate counseling programs and services. E

Direct and assist in the design and implementation of District-wide counseling initiatives focused on equity, belonging, and thriving. E

Organize crisis and trauma response counseling support to school sites and District offices by deploying appropriate personnel for both student and staff needs. E

Direct and assist in the design of counseling programs, social-emotional services, and social skill development for students. E

Oversee policies and procedures supporting the physical and mental well-being of students through the development and implementation of lessons.

Lessons may be related to topics such as drug, tobacco, and alcohol prevention, self-harm, anger-management, neuro-divergent learners, and restorative practices. E

Provide modeling, coaching, and feedback to counselors on the implementation of small-group and classroom-based lessons. E

Provide professional learning opportunities around laws and regulations, compliance issues, corrective actions, program development, and related functions utilizing concepts associated with adult learning theory. E

Provide direction for fiscal planning, lesson development, budgeting, staffing, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of assigned counseling programs and services. E

Oversee the implementation of District-adopted school counseling standards; provide standards-aligned professional development based on data-informed decision making, ensure standards are applied to all students systematically and includes developmentally appropriate lessons focused on the mindsets and behaviors students need for postsecondary readiness and success. E

Assist management within other departments in planning programs and implementation of services to support high expectations and standards of performance for all students. E

Collaborate with governmental agencies, regional agencies, and others related to counseling services for students; organize and negotiate development of interagency agreements, coordinate activities and programs, resolve issues and conflicts, and exchange information. E

Provide leadership in the review of existing and pending legislation related to counseling guidelines and District policies;

recommend origination, modification, or support of legislative measures. E

Develop, allocate, and monitor budgets for assigned programs, services, facilities, equipment, staffing, and inventories to ensure fiscal responsibility. E

Plan and coordinate the preparation of funding applications for new and existing grants, other funding sources, and for reimbursement requests ensuring compliance with funding requirements as appropriate. E

Plan, organize, and implement long- and short-term projects to enhance counseling programs and services to students. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MININUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

A combination of training, experience, and / or education equivalent to a Master’s degree in education or closely related field and five (5) years of supervisory or administrative experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS :

Valid California Administrative Services Credential.

Possession of a valid California driver’s license and availability of private transportation (mileage expense allowance provided).
