Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Registered Nurse to join the Child & Youth Public Health team working out of the Pacific Spirit Community Health Centre in Vancouver, BC.

As a Public Health Nurse with Vancouver Coastal Health you will :

Utilize public health nursing knowledge and expertise to promote and protect the optimal health, well-being and safety of prenatal, infants, young children, youth, adults and families at all ages and life stages through selected and targeted programming.

Provide a full continuum of services including prevention, health promotion and early intervention services to individuals / groups in a variety of community-based settings using an equity based approach to support population health and to mitigate the impacts of the social determinants of health with equity deserving populations.

Establish and maintains interdisciplinary and community relationships with internal and external partners.

Identify the client as an individual / community / system and determines necessary interventions using a continuum of public health nursing interventions such as screening, assessment, referral, advocacy, surveillance and monitoring, education, consultation and by responding to public health emerging issues.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Completion of specialty nursing certificate (. 20 hour breast / chest feeding education), BCCDC immunization certificate, BCCNM certified practice designation in contraceptive management and / or STI, as applicable and two (2) years' recent, related public health nursing experience including experience related to the designated client population (.

prenatal, infant, child, youth and / or adult), or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Valid BC Driver's license and access to personal vehicle for business related purposes.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of public health nursing theory, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of community development and health promotion principles and practices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of evidence informed nursing practice related to normal growth and development of relevant populations and appropriate screening and referral processes.
  • General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of communicable disease control practices and procedures including : prevention, promotion, reporting responsibilities and related procedures and immunization practices, including up to date immunization competency.
  • Knowledge of Baby Friendly initiative, including completion of relevant breastfeeding course(s).
  • Demonstrated certified practice related skills / abilities to provide contraceptive management and to assess and treat sexually transmitted infections.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with co-workers, physicians, other health care staff, clients and their families and outside agencies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care, the ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with co-workers, care team and community partners and the ability to identify and facilitate community resources appropriate to clients’ and families’ needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to counsel, teach, facilitate and coach individuals, families and groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal sensitively and tactfully with clients and provide culturally sensitive nursing services to diverse and equity deserving populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and prioritise work.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse situations, problem solve and facilitate resolutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with others to make evidence informed decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new and unexpected events.
  • Demonstrated facilitation, mediation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in the development and delivery of educational materials based on education theories and best practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic research principles and procedures, such as research ethics, research question, hypothesis and qualitative vs.

quantitative data analysis methods, and demonstrated ability to participate in research.

  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections.

Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
