As a member of the Logistics team, this position’s primary responsibility is to be the main point of contact for customs operations by monitoring all imports to Canada and export shipments from Canada.
Additional responsibility includes freight invoice processing on a daily basis.
The incumbent is responsible for meeting the requirements of regulatory agencies relating to international trade and all matters relating to customs, including release and accounting requirements, free trade agreement requirements and the other specified government agencies.
The position report to the Logistics Manager Cost, Customs and Claims.
Role and Responsibilities
- Review and maintain HS classification codes in system
- Free trade agreement or CPTPP or certificate of origin follow up with various points of origins or acquire from system
- Determination of tariff treatment based on documents and provide tariff opinion to Logistics Manager or Senior team member for approval
- Handling general inquiries professionally (internally and externally) over the phone, in person, or through email
- Supports the Canadian business units and provides documentation and information requirements to facilitate in / out movements
- Customs reporting and maintaining customs dashboard to publish internally
- Assist with any duty recoverable follow up and reporting as required
- Maintaining and updating our standard operating procedures
- Trade compliance governance with the following : CBSA; B2 adjustments; new trade programs
- Creation of customs documentation (Commercial Invoice, B13, Packing List)
- Liaise with internal and external team on customs support such as but not limited to : documentation, clearance delay, HS code maintenance, customs exam etc.
- Provide recommendations if there is any process gaps or areas of risk or opportunity and report to Assistant Manager
- Assist the Logistics Manager or Senior team member with any special customs project as required
- Downloading invoice data from system and provide to 3PL daily
- Processing of invoices from 3PL and any other adhoc invoice received
- Record retention filing system and maintenance of documents
- Any other duties as required or requested will be assigned
Skills and Qualifications
Education :
- Post-secondary education from a recognized college or university required
- CCS (Certified Customs Specialist) designation an asset
- Logistics designations / Professional Accreditation (CCLP, P.Log., etc.) preferred
- International Incoterms / Trade Agreements expertise (CUSMA, etc) preferred
Knowledge :
- Intermediate MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint) suite
- Good knowledge of Canadian Importation Law,
- Customs management
- Tariff structures
- Risk / Control management of spend across multiple Logistics cost points.
- Data retrieval and manipulation experience with demonstrable, verifiable output and report creation.
- Good communication skills both verbal and written
- Ability to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous task
- Demonstrates strong networking and interpersonal skills and professionalism to deal with all levels of personnel
- Very organized and can approach task methodical
- Excellent attention to detail
- Team player
- Approachable, ability to work effectively in a high pressure environment
Experience :
- Minimum 3 years customs brokerage or customs compliance role and Importation expertise, inclusive of International Incoterms / Trade Agreements / Global supply realization
- Experience in Logistics Cost Management inclusive of invoice verification process, Tariff master creation and maintenance.
- Customs compliance with special advocacy on tariffs such as HS classification, Tariff treatment, duty etc.
