Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment, has an exciting opportunity available on its award-winning news team as Managing Editor for Calgary. The successful candidate will be required to work primarily on weekdays, with weekend and evening work as required by our dynamic news environment. Responsibilities
The Managing Editor will :
- Ensure editorial resources are assigned to meet the needs of our local news platforms with a focus on priority topics local audiences want covered.
- Monitor story development throughout the day and provide guidance and coaching to digital journalists, assignment editor, supervisor online journalist and news ENG photographers on story direction and storytelling techniques.
- Vet reporter scripts each day, ensuring editorial standards and Global News Journalist Principles and Practices are met.
- Develop and maintain a high standard of content creation that includes effective writing, editing, and shooting for both digital and tv.
Day-to-day operations
Oversee the daily editorial agenda for all platforms, placing an emphasis on local news and video content to serve all platforms in Calgary and Lethbridge.Drive daily story meetings and editorial content with a focus on audience engagement.Coordinate daily and future editorial plans with affiliate stations and Global National.Ensure timely and effective communication between TV, Radio and Online.Manage all reporters, photographers, assignment editor, and digital journalists in Calgary and oversee various operational requirements pertaining to performance, labour relations, scheduling and timesheets.Work with the marketing and sales departments to ensure initiatives and integration are executed successfully.Break traditional newsroom boundaries to liase and improve communication lines with supporting departments i.e. Production, Marketing, Sales, Engineering.Coordinate resources for all special projects and breaking news.Ensure all OPEX targets are met with a critical eye on local budgets.Create and implement strategies that support network priorities while ensuring employees have sustainable workflows.Ability to drive and manage workplace change, remain adaptable, and help employees embrace transitions.Coach and mentor
Provide coaching for employees and celebrate high performers and innovative thinkers.Develop and execute strategies to give real and timely feedback on storytelling and writing to create a best-in-class team.Lead bi-weekly touch bases with all direct reports to ensure they are supported.Develop and deliver strong engagement initiatives designed to help employees grow.Work with supervisors to hire, recruit and onboard new employees.Lead annual performance reviews with quarterly check-ins to ensure career growth goals are met.Strong communication and model Corus Values.Skills and experience you will bring
A post-secondary degree in broadcast journalism or a related field.An extensive background in broadcast news with proven experience in news management.Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in managing broadcast news platforms and reporting in a major market.An amazing attitude that will engage and motivate teams.Demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills.A track record of creative storytelling with strong production skills.Must be able to adapt under pressure and be able to work in a fast-paced environment with exceptional multi-tasking ability.You thrive in evolving environments, champion change initiatives, and support employees in adopting new ways of working.Working knowledge of digital tools and technologies including server-based production.Must be able to handle the demands and pressure of multiple, daily deadlines for broadcast and digital platforms.Deep knowledge of Calgary and surrounding news markets.A valid driver’s license and clear driver abstract.#J-18808-Ljbffr
