Role Overview
veritree is hiring a Controller to fully own the company's accounting and financial reporting operations and act as the CFO's primary operational right hand. This role is responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and scalability of all accounting activities across veritree's commercial entities and its registered charities in Canada and the United States.
This is a hands-on, execution-first role in a fast-paced, scaling climate-tech and SaaS-enabled organization. Success in this role is defined by operational excellence, judgment, and reliability.
6-Month Key Outcomes (6mKOs)
- Full Operational Ownership : Independently own all accounting operations (AP, AR, payroll, close, tax, audits, controls, systems) with minimal CFO involvement in day-to-day execution
- Reliable Close & Compliance : Deliver a timely, accurate month‑end (by working day 5) and year‑end close (no misstatements and within required deadlines) across all entities, including charity reporting
- Customer Segmentation & Revenue Automation : Deploy a new customer segmentation methodology across our tech stack and implement a new revenue automation tool (e.g. SuiteBilling or Maxio) that recognizes revenue and gross margin based on a new revenue recognition policy
What You’ll Do
Accounting Operations & Close
Own the full month-end and year-end close process across all entities and charitiesOversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and PayrollReview and approve reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and schedulesMaintain accurate deferred revenue accounting, customer segmentation impacts, and contract-based accounting workflowsGross Margin & Unit Economics
Maintain accurate COGS, unit cost, and gross margin reportingEnsure unit economics reflect true underlying costs in partnership with Supply Ops, RevOps, and ProductSupport internal reporting that enables operational decision-makingFoundation Accounting & Reporting
Own day-to-day accounting and reporting for two registered charitable foundations (Canada and U.S.) using QuickBooksEnsure compliance with charity-specific accounting, reporting, and audit requirementsCoordinate reporting inputs with consolidated finance outputsAudit, Tax & Compliance
Lead the annual financial statement audit end-to-endManage income tax and indirect tax (e.g. GST / PST) filings and documentationCoordinate external auditors and tax advisors; respond to ad-hoc audits (grants, compliance) as requiredSystems, Controls & Process Ownership
Act as owner of the ERP, ensuring data integrity across multi-entity, multi-currency, and dimensional reporting structuresMaintain QuickBooks environments for charities and ensure alignment with consolidated reportingDesign, document, and enforce internal controls and accounting policiesDrive process improvements and automation to increase reliability and reduce manual workLeadership & Partnership
Directly manage and develop the Accounting StaffServe as the CFO's operational right hand, escalating judgment calls, risks, or material issues appropriatelyPartner cross‑functionally to ensure Finance enables execution and growth rather than creating frictionRequirements
Qualifications
CPA designation required (or international equivalent)7‑10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in tech / SaaS environmentsStrong understanding of deferred revenue, customer segmentation, and contract-based accountingExperience producing gross margin and unit cost reporting for productized or service-based businessesProven experience leading audits and managing income tax and indirect tax complianceERP experience required; Netsuite and QuickBooks experience strongly preferredExperience with Float and Beanworks or similar AP automation toolsExperience with Netsuite's SuiteBilling or Maxio revenue automation toolsHighly accountable, hands‑on, and pragmatic with a "roll‑up-your-sleeves" mindsetBenefits & Compensation Overview
