Senior Backend Developer

Hybrid in Edmonton, Alberta (Remote possible for exceptional candidates).

Position Overview

Artificial.Agency is seeking a Sr. Backend Developer to design and build robust, scalable services that power our Al-driven systems. You'll design and implement backend features in Python, contribute to database architecture, and collaborate closely with frontend, game, and Al engineering teams. While Python is our core today, we're exploring lower-level languages such as Rust for performance-critical components - experience here is a strong plus.

You’ll work on systems that demand ultra-low latency performance, support massive concurrency at global scale, and operate across multi-tenant cloud environments and customer‑deployed VPCs. Key Responsibilities

Service Architecture & Development : Design, build, and maintain backend services; implement clean, modular, and testable code across distributed systems. Deploy, operate and optimize services in cloud environments, selecting appropriate technologies and ensuring reliability, scalability, and maintainability.

Contribute insights into when lower‑level languages (e.g., Rust) may be beneficial for performance‑critical features.

Database Design : Own data modeling, schema design, and performance optimization; collaborate on database strategy and long‑term scalability.

Collaboration : Manage and prioritize work across multiple projects, balancing business value, deadlines, and stakeholders’ needs. Conduct code reviews, support the growth of others and champion engineering best practices.

Tooling : improve developer workflows through tooling, automation, and documentation.

Qualifications

Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

5+ years of professional backend development experience, with a strong focus on Python.

Deep understanding of service‑oriented architecture and distributed system patterns.

Strong experience with relational database design (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and schema planning.

Hands‑on experience operating, administering and optimizing production cloud services, including performance tuning, monitoring, and service selection.

Experience migrating services and data between cloud platforms, providers, or architectures.

Proficient with GitHub workflows and modern CI / CD practices.

Familiarity with containerized environments (Docker) and cloud platforms is a bonus.

Bonus : You're a gamer and understand player expectations, real‑time systems, or interactive experiences.
