We are looking for an enthusiasticIndigenous community organizer social worker or other professionalto colead our CBJT project on an 12 month contract.

The position ispart time at 2.5 days a week.

What Is theCBJT

Communities Building JusticeTogether (CBJT) : Increasing Access to Justice for Indigenous andBlack Communities in Scarborough.

This project is funded through aDiscretionary Grant from the Law Foundation of Ontario. We deeplythank the Law Foundation for their support of this work.

Thisproject will build and develop communityled resources with EastScarboroughs Black and Indigenous communities. Clinic staff andcommunity members will codevelop and deliver public legal educationevents materials and resources relevant to the needs of thesecommunities.

Further with these communities we will provide supportnavigating the legal system and provide a platform for communitydeveloping and organizing around access to justice issues.

Thiswork is fundamentally grounded in a comprehensive communitylistening process which will guide us regarding the specific legalneeds of Indigenous and Black communities in EastScarborough.

Duties andResponsibilities

ProjectCoordination

  • Cocoordinate theCommunities Building Justice Together (CBJT) : Increasing Access toJustice for Indigenous and Black Communities in Scarborough (theProject) including reporting to the funder monitoring projectbudget and completing projectdeliverables.
  • Cochair and lead as required theProject Advisory Committee to guide the Project in a good way thatmeets the needs and reflects the lived experiences of Black andIndigenous Communities in EastScarborough.
  • Collaborate with externalconsultants and Management regarding the Projects CommunityListening / Needs Assessment Process.
  • SupportIndigenous clients with poverty law issues with systemnavigation.

Law Reform / Organizing& Public LegalEducation

  • Lead and organize the lawreform and community organizing efforts arising from theProject.
  • Steward existing communityrelationships and build new community connections through creativeoutreach and organizing strategies within Indigenous Communities inEast Scarborough.
  • Identify and carry out lawreform initiatives relating to Indigenous Communities in EastScarborough.
  • Represent the clinic to communitygroups by providing resources and expertise in legal issuesimpacting Indigenous Communities in EastScarborough.
  • Write and present briefs tovarious levels of government on legal issues impacting IndigenousCommunities in East Scarborough.
  • Lead andorganize the public legal education activities of theProject.
  • Write edit review clinicproduced PLEmaterials on legal issues impacting the Indigenous Community inEastScarborough.

PleaseNote : Given the nature of this role it mayrequire work to occasionally be performed outside regular workhours including on evenings and weekends.

Qualifications andExperience

  • You havelived experience as a member of the Indigenouscommunity.
  • You have experience leading / managingcommunity based projects or programs.
  • You haveexperience managing activities among interdisciplinary / diversecommunity groups.
  • You have a demonstratedcommitment to social justice and working for positive social changeon issues that affect lowincome individuals and groups particularlyIndigenous communities.
  • You have the strongcommunication and interpersonal skills that are needed to addressthe needs of people from a variety of social and culturalbackgrounds but in particular those engaged by thisProject.
  • You have a collaborative work approachand the ability to work well in a teambasedenvironment.
  • Experience as a paralegal in goodstanding of the Law Society of Ontario is anasset.
  • Experience managing or coordinatingfunded projects is an asset.
  • Experience leadinglaw reform and public legal education initiatives is anasset.

Terms ofEmployment

This is an 12 monthcontract for 2.5 days per week. The annual salary is $65000prorated to 2.5 days per week (o.5 FTE).

We havea Remote Work Policy that permits a hybrid work arrangement forthis position after completion of a probationaryperiod.
