This role contributes to the Career Exploration & Education unit.

Mission : The mission of Career Exploration and Education (CxED) at the University of Toronto St. George campus is to engage students to develop self-directed career management skills through partnership with (a) faculty, to connect academic and career learning;

b) alumni and employers, to develop informational and experiential networks and opportunities; and (c) our campus community, to embed career support locally to meet diverse student needs.

Your opportunity :

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Career Education, supervised by the Lead Coordinator, Career Education, and working with other members of Career Exploration & Education and the School of Graduate Studies (SGS), the Graduate Career Educator will be responsible for developing and delivering career education programs and resources for professional and graduate students and recent alumni that leverages active, anti-oppressive, hope-centred and self-directed approaches to learning and reflection.

With attention to the unique and intersecting career needs of graduate and professional students particularly from Indigenous and equity deserving student communities (including but not limited to Black, racialized, 2SLGBTQ+ students and students with disabilities), and as part of collaborative team efforts, the Graduate Career Educator will ensure that career education programs, services, and resources facilitates graduate and professional students’ career learning and agency, and develop their career skills, knowledge, and mindsets for lifelong career success and wellbeing.

As a member of Career Exploration & Education (CxED), and in collaboration with the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and other academic and co-curricular partners, and student groups, the Graduate Career Educator will engage in five key areas of responsibility :

1. Design and deliver career learning experiences (e.g. workshops, events, programs) that support graduate and professional students’ career learning and development

2. Provide individual career advising and facilitate referrals to campus and community services and resources

3. Collaborate with CxED colleagues to expand opportunities for graduate and professional students to connect and build meaningful relationships with employers, alumni and community

4. Develop online career content and support the curation of other career related resources specifically for graduate and professional students

5. Integrate career learning into experiential learning and high impact co-curricular and extra-curricular graduate and professional student experiences

Across all five areas of responsibility, the incumbent will establish career learning principles, explore relevant labor market trends, employ advising and coaching practices, and integrate learning design principles to develop, deliver, and assess programs, services & resources for all graduate and professional students and recent alumni across the University of Toronto.

Your responsibilities will include :

  • Implementing programming to foster students' individual career development process
  • Advising and coaching students on developing career-related goals
  • Conducting detailed analysis on program efficiency and student learning outcomes to inform program planning activities
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Advising students on career-related matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of anindividual's background
  • Advising students on employment options and strategies to achieve their career goals
  • Advising students on how to conduct job searches, cover letter and resume development
  • Developing student assessment plansto support student learning outcomes and competencies

Essential Qualifications :

  • Master's Degree in student development, leadership development, higher education, or adult education or an acceptable equivalentcombination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of progressive experience advising graduate and professional students about career-related matters and providing tailored support based on needs.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience in an experiential program delivery environment, with an emphasis on curriculum development, group facilitation and reflection, assessment, preferably within an educational setting, or the non-profit sector.
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of equity, inclusion & reconciliation and knowledge and awareness of the life experiences and career needs of Indigenous, Black, racialized, 2SLGBTQ+ students and students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, facilitate and assess effective, multi-modal, interactive learning opportunities and environments for students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to research, learn and utilize theoretical approaches and best-practices for career education.

Working knowledge of and experience using career development, student development and other related theories.

  • Proven knowledge of experiential learning models, pedagogy and andragogy.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and implementing appropriate approaches to assessing learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience building relationships with academic and co-curricular partners, students, and student groups.
  • Ability to work in a highly diverse University community and to work constructive and cooperatively with a variety of campus partners in order to foster a support an environment of trust, respect and collaboration.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment in a busy, deadline oriented workplace.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Sound presentation and public speaking skills utilizing new technology and creativity.
  • Commitment to continuous professional learning and development.
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint) and well-developed technology skills including locating and evaluating relevant material using the Internet and database searches;

comfort with automated computer systems (e.g. blogs, social networking, e-learning, video clips).
