Position Summary
Are you a hands-on building maintenance professional who prefers working on the tools rather than behind a desk? The YMCA of Saskatoon is seeking a Building Operator to play a front-line, hands-on role in maintaining, repairing, and operating our facilities.
This position is primarily a working technician role, with most time spent completing repairs, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting building systems. You will lead through your technical expertise and day-to-day work, working side-by-side with another technician to keep our buildings safe, functional, and welcoming.
This role is based at the Downtown YMCA and provides hands-on support to other YMCA locations as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Hands-On Repairs & Maintenance
Perform routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems
Repair lighting, fixtures, doors, locks, and general building hardware
Complete minor carpentry, drywall, painting, and general building repairs
Perform maintenance and minor repairs on fitness and aquatic equipment
Conduct preventative maintenance to minimize downtime and equipment failure
Respond to urgent and emergency maintenance issues, including after-hours as required
Building Systems Operations
Inspect, operate, and monitor HVAC, boiler, electrical, and mechanical systems
Support pool operations, including water chemistry monitoring and filtration systems
Identify and address system inefficiencies or emerging maintenance concerns
Ensure building systems operate safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements
Technical Leadership & Team Support
Work hands-on alongside a fellow technician on daily repairs and maintenance tasks
Lead by example through safe, efficient, and high-quality technical work
Share practical knowledge, troubleshooting approaches, and best practices on the job
Support day-to-day facility readiness by resolving maintenance issues as they arise
Safety & Compliance
Perform routine life safety checks, fire system testing, and inspections
Follow and demonstrate proper WHMIS, OH&S, and YMCA safety standards
Participate in emergency response activities and safety drills
Apply lockout / tagout and other safety procedures during maintenance work
Documentation & Work Tracking
Complete maintenance logs, inspection records, and work order updates
Track repairs completed and materials used
Identify required parts, tools, and supplies
Coordinate with contractors when required (hands-on support and oversight only)
Continuous Improvement
Identify recurring maintenance issues and recommend practical, hands-on solutions
Support lifecycle planning for equipment and building systems
Suggest improvements to preventative maintenance routines and operational efficiency
Qualifications
Proven hands-on experience in building operations or facility maintenance
Fireman Boiler Operator Certification (or willingness to obtain)
Swimming Pool Operator Certification (preferred)
Valid driver’s license (preferred)
Standard First Aid & CPR (or willingness to obtain)
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work safely at heights
Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and building systems
Comfortable working independently and in a physically active, hands-on role
