Probationary Fire Training Officer
FIRE TRAINING DIVISION

Reporting to : Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief
Department : Fire - Training
Classification : PERMANENT Full Time; Unionized
Salary Range : $122,700 (2024 rate)
Hours of Work : 8 : 30 a.m. to 4 : 30 p.m. Monday to Friday
Starting Date : TBD, 2024

Responsibilities :
- Safely supervise high-risk emergency training evolutions.
- Evaluate emergency operations and critique to determine department training requirements.
- Approve, develop, conduct, and evaluate training plans and curriculum for the Department.
- Maintain accurate training records, document mandated training according to departmental and legislative standards, ensure all training is conducted in a uniform manner to all members.
- Administer and monitor secondary and college level cooperative education programs and conduct performance evaluations of Coop Students.
- Participate in the development and administration of departmental testing procedures.
- Ensure compliance with legislative standards, departmental policies, and best practices.
- Counsel employees on available training and educational opportunities.
- Prepare training budget, control and monitor expenditures.
- May be assigned to assist at an emergency scene as sector or safety officer.
- Under the direction of the Chief, attend Emergency Management Ontario Training sessions and deliver appropriate training to Emergency Management Personnel.
- Attend additional training as directed by the Fire Chief.
- Other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications : Essential :
Essential :
- Grade 12 education or equivalent secondary education as established by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
- NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I & II Certified.
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level II Certified.
- NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor Level II Certified.
- Ability to instruct, develop, and deliver training in all areas of Fire & Emergency Services operations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel.
- Ability to prepare and administer training budget.
- Experience in classroom instruction and in the usage of audio-visual aids.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Instructional experience in emergency medical response.
- Instructional and practical experience in incident command.
- Knowledge of NFPA 1500, NFPA 1403, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Section 21 committee guidelines.
- Experience in incident safety officer roles.
- Must possess and maintain a valid, Class D Ontario Driver’s License with Z endorsement.
Preferred :
- Blue Card Command Certified Instructor
- NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officer Certified
- Instructional experience in advanced extrication is preferred.
- Instructional experience in hazardous materials response is preferred.
- Instructional experience in various technical rescue disciplines, including ice / water rescue, rope rescue, trench rescue, confined space rescue and structural collapse is preferred.
- Experience and proficiency in e-learning, virtual reality simulation and other multi-media training platforms.
- Administrative and computer skills.
