The Opportunity
Our client in Southwestern Ontario is sourcing a Chief Mine Engineer to provide senior technical leadership for an underground salt mining operation. This role is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant design, planning, and execution of mining activities, with oversight of mine planning, ground control, ventilation coordination, and regulatory compliance. The Chief Mine Engineer plays a critical role in aligning engineering strategy with production goals, cost control, and continuous improvement initiatives, while working closely with operations, health and safety, maintenance, geology, and environmental teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead short-, medium-, and long-term mine planning activities, including life-of-mine plans, annual budgets, and monthly forecasts
- Develop, review, and approve mine designs, layouts, sequencing, and extraction strategies suited to soft rock underground mining
- Ensure mine plans optimize safety, production efficiency, resource recovery, and cost effectiveness
- Review and validate engineering designs, drawings, and technical reports
- Provide engineering support for underground dewatering systems, power distribution, and construction projects
- Provide technical oversight for ground control, roof support design, and strata control programs
- Collaborate with ventilation specialists to ensure effective ventilation plans and regulatory compliance
- Participate in risk assessments, hazard identification, and implementation of engineering controls
- Support incident investigations and implement corrective engineering actions as required
- Ensure compliance with Ontario mining legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulation 854
- Ensure engineering work meets Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) standards and best practices
- Act as a technical authority during regulatory inspections, audits, and submissions
- Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Geology, Health & Safety, and Environmental teams to align engineering plans with execution
- Provide technical problem-solving support for day-to-day mining challenges
- Support capital projects, equipment selection, and infrastructure planning
- Supervise contractors and manage key ground control initiatives
- Lead, mentor, and develop mine engineering staff, supporting performance management and succession planning
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and collaboration across technical and operational teams.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related disciplineProfessional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario or eligibility for registration (required)8+ years of progressive mining engineering experience, preferably in soft rock underground operationsPrior experience in a senior or lead engineering role within an underground mineStrong knowledge of Ontario mining regulations and industry best practicesExperience with mine planning software and engineering toolsStrong technical and analytical skills with sound engineering judgmentProven leadership and people management experienceExcellent communication and stakeholder engagement skillsAbility to balance safety, regulatory compliance, and production objectivesHigh level of integrity, professionalism, and accountabilityCompensation Range : 150,000- 175,000
