McEwen Mining Inc. has four producing mines, located in Nevada, Ontario, Mexico, and Argentina, and also has exposure to copper through its subsidiary McEwen Copper, owner of the large Los Azules copper deposit in Argentina.

Chief Metallurgist

Reporting to the Mill Manager, the Chief Metallurgist is responsible for providing specialist-level metallurgical technical support and high-quality testing service to the organization, driving, and influencing continuous improvement and best practice.

They will interact with Mill employees, supervisors, coordinators, managers and JHSEC. They must be a committed team player with a strong knowledge of and dedication to safety and production methods.

Other duties will be assigned as per operational needs.

Operational Planning & Technical Execution

  • Support Mill Operations through review of procedures and technical reports; make recommendations to improve current processes, aligned with best practices in the industry.
  • Oversee the milling and processing of the ore, including coordinating ore types being delivered, monitoring haulage and milling tonnes on a daily basis and conducting month end process inventory surveys.
  • Establish and implement a grade control plan for the processing of the ore and complete monthly reconciliation.
  • Maintain metallurgical balance and production statistics through sampling and data collection; ensure data collection is accurate.
  • Evaluate sodium cyanide consumption, cost, and safety to determine processes for removal / treatment.
  • Monitor and perform test work to optimize the effluent water treatment.
  • Provide technical support in areas of mineral process related research and development.
  • Review up and coming ore properties. Review ore characteristics and adjust if required to the current milling process. If changes are required, make sure equipment and reagents have been ordered and installed before the new ore / ores arrive for processing.
  • Apt to direct / perform diagnostic testing on various development ores to determine various process design criteria such as projected / potential plant throughput, energy consumption, optimal metallurgical recovery, reagent requirements, and environmental impacts.

General Administration and Controls

  • Apt to provide direction and oversight of off-site metallurgical testing regimes toward feasibility and mine development studies.
  • Review process route for development properties.
  • Mentor met techs in metallurgy.
  • Optimize through test work carbon attrition rates.
  • Optimize reagent addition to lower costs.

Qualifications and Skills Requirement :

  • Valid driver’s license and a reliable means of transportation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to propagate technical information within a team environment while ensuring duties are performed in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan and schedule activities.
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills while working under pressure requiring immediate response to issues.
  • Ability to interact with a wide variety of departments / roles.
  • Must be able to work alone with minimum supervision.
  • Highly motivated professional with intent to become part of the McEwen Mill team supporting the Safety and the Milling processes.
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as, Excel, Word, Draw and ability to interpret bar graphs.
  • Proficient with computer hardware / software systems and programs.
  • Experience on Auto Cad is required.
  • Must have solid knowledge / understanding of operating procedures and control strategies for ore milling and processing.
  • 1-3 years’ experience with ore controls preferably in a coarse gold mining environment is required.
  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree in chemical engineering or in a related discipline (e.g. Metallurgy, Mineral Processing) is required.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate considered an asset.
