Volunteer Content Writer (Blog)

Vancouver Startup Week (VSW) is a community-led week of events that brings together founders, builders, creatives, investors, and the startup curious across Vancouver. We exist to strengthen the local startup ecosystem through connection, storytelling, and community-powered programming.

Role Description

We’re building our VSW 2026 volunteer team and looking for a Volunteer Content Writer (Blog) to help tell the stories that make this community what it is.

As a Volunteer Content Writer (Blog), you’ll write blog content that highlights founders, startups, partners, and community moments across the VSW ecosystem. You’ll work with the Brand, Digital Experience, and Content teams to support our content calendar leading up to VSW 2026, helping us grow awareness, engagement, and community momentum.

This is a great role if you’re a strong writer who enjoys startup storytelling and cares about community building.

• Write blog posts aligned to VSW’s content calendar and priorities
• Pitch and develop story ideas that spotlight startups, entrepreneurs, partners, and ecosystem stories
• Conduct light research and occasional interviews (as needed)
• Edit and refine drafts to match VSW’s voice and quality standards
• Support blog publishing tasks such as formatting, headlines, meta descriptions, internal linking, and image placement
• Collaborate with volunteers and leads via Slack and Google Workspace
• Contribute to recurring content series that strengthen community and improve consistency

What We\'re Looking For

• 2 to 5 years of experience in blog and content writing (freelance, in-house, agency, or editorial)
• Experience writing for startups, entrepreneurs, small businesses, or innovation communities
• Strong writing fundamentals: clarity, structure, voice, and storytelling
• Comfortable taking direction from a brief and turning it into a polished post
• Organized, reliable, and able to hit deadlines with minimal hand-holding
• Genuine interest in community building and community outreach through content

Nice to Have

• Entrepreneurial mindset and interest in founder culture
• Experience interviewing founders or writing profiles and spotlights
• Familiarity with SEO best practices
• Experience working with content calendars and cross-functional teams
• Ability to write across tones (editorial, informative, celebratory, promotional)

Volunteer Expectations

• This is a volunteer position for the VSW 2026 cycle
• If selected, it is highly recommended that you volunteer at least one shift during Vancouver Startup Week to support event operations and experience the full atmosphere
• Volunteers gain access to mentorship, portfolio building opportunities, and direct connections in Vancouver’s tech and startup community
• Consistent volunteers may be eligible for reference letters or recommendation support
